Hume falsely claimed Obama "contradicted what he wrote in his book" about town hall meetings

On Special Report, Brit Hume falsely claimed that Sen. Barack Obama "contradicted what he wrote in his book" about town hall meetings and quoted from Obama's book The Audacity of Hope, in which Obama wrote: "One of my favorite tasks of being a senator is hosting town hall meetings." But contrary to Hume's assertion, Obama has hosted 18 town hall meetings in the past two months.

Hume: "[W]e regret the error" in report of Jerusalem Post story about Obama's half brother

On Special Report, Brit Hume issued a correction following his false claim that Sen. Barack Obama's half brother had told The Jerusalem Post that Obama had a "Muslim background." But while Hume suggested that his only "error" was in repeating a flawed report in the Post, he did not acknowledge that he had falsely claimed Malik Obama had spoken with The Jerusalem Post. The Post did not claim that Malik Obama spoke to the newspaper; the article indicated that Malik Obama gave an interview to Israel's Army Radio, not the Post.

Hume claimed Gore's "energy use has surged more than 10 percent," ignored Gore's response that it's all "green power"

On Special Report, citing purported findings by the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, Brit Hume claimed that Al Gore's "energy use has surged more than 10 percent" since environmentally friendly renovations were completed on his home. Hume offered no response from Gore. Responding to the charge, a Gore spokeswoman stated that "[w]hen [the Gores] do use power, it's green power." According to the Tennessee Valley Authority, green power "create[s] less waste and pollution" than standard electricity.

Hume falsely claimed Obama's half brother told The Jerusalem Post that Obama had a "Muslim background"

On Special Report, Brit Hume stated that Malik Obama, Sen. Barack Obama's half brother, "tells The Jerusalem Post that 'if elected his brother will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background.' " In fact, the article to which Hume was apparently referring indicated that Malik Obama did not speak directly with the Post but, rather, gave an interview to Israel's Army Radio. Moreover, nowhere in audio of the interview that ABC's Jake Tapper posted did Malik Obama assert that Obama "will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background."

CNN, Fox News falsely suggested Senate report finding Bush administration "misled Americans" about Iraq-Al Qaeda link was approved only by Dems

CNN's Carol Costello and Ed Henry, and Fox News' Brit Hume falsely suggested that only the Democratic members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence approved the committee's June 5 "Report on Whether Public Statements Regarding Iraq by U.S. Government Officials Were Substantiated by Intelligence Information." In addition to the committee's Democrats, Republican Sens. Chuck Hagel and Olympia Snowe endorsed the report and stated that it "accomplished its primary objective."

In reports about televangelist John Hagee's apology for his anti-Catholic remarks, neither The Washington Post's Michael D. Shear nor Fox News' Brit Hume mentioned that Hagee -- whose endorsement Sen. John McCain has acknowledged seeking -- also has made controversial statements about women, race, homosexuality, and Islam.

On the March 24 edition of MSNBC's Countdown, Keith Olbermann named New York Times columnist William Kristol the "runner-up" and Sen.
Citing his experience, This Week, Fox News Sunday panelists excuse McCain's Al Qaeda-Iran gaffe

The Washington Post's George Will asserted that Sen. John McCain's admittedly false claim that Iran is training Al Qaeda is "[n]ot damaging at all" to McCain, "because people say it's a given that this man knows what he's talking about." Similarly, The Chicago Tribune's Jill Zuckman asserted that "I don't think many people believe" "the argument that McCain doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to foreign policy." But neither Will nor Zuckman noted that McCain has made that error more than once.

Gingrich, Hume criticize Obama for invoking his grandmother in the context of Wright

Responding to Barack Obama's noting, in addressing controversial statements made by Rev. Jeremiah Wright, that his white grandmother had "uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes," Newt Gingrich said on Fox News: To reduce a 20-year relationship with a public figure to his grandmother is just wrong. It's emotionally powerful, but it's just wrong." Separately, Fox News' Brit Hume said of Obama's statement: "[S]ome may find it deceptive, but ... it was pretty clever."

Hume joins other media in ignoring McCain's failure to commit to tax return release

On Special Report, Molly Henneberg reported that Sen. John McCain's "full medical records will be released around April 15th." Host Brit Hume then asked, "Along with Hillary [Clinton]'s tax records, right?" Henneberg responded: "Right." But neither Henneberg nor Hume noted that McCain reportedly "hasn't released his tax returns either. His campaign has said it won't decide whether to release the returns until after he is officially the nominee."

Baier falsely described Senate-passed FISA amendments bill as "surveillance reauthorization"

Fox News' Bret Baier reported that "in recent days ... Republicans have tried to link surveillance reauthorization to almost every" piece of legislation House Democrats have tried to pass. In fact, the authority to conduct "surveillance" does not need "reauthorization"; the government currently has the authority to eavesdrop on the communications of suspected terrorists primarily through the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

Fox News' Special Report touted McCain accomplishment in not losing his temper at Florida event

On Special Report, Brit Hume aired a report by Carl Cameron about Sen. John McCain keeping his temper in check when the microphone did not work during a donor's conference in Florida and later when he was hit on the head by a TV camera. At the end of the report, Cameron stated: "McCain makes no bones about blowing his stack occasionally and having a temper. A campaign has the capacity to test the temperament and character of a candidate. If today was a pop quiz, you got to say McCain passed." Hume replied: "Yeah, with flying colors I'd say, under the circumstances."

On Fox News Sunday, Rove and Wallace failed to note Obama has answered questions about Farrakhan

On Fox News Sunday, Karl Rove asserted of Sen. Barack Obama facing questions about the Nation of Islam's Louis Farrakhan: "Now, having ties to Louis Farrakhan and his anti-Semitic comments, that's -- that's -- you know, people have a reason -- that's a reasonable question: Do you agree with him? Do you renounce him? Do you reject him?" In fact, Obama has denied that his campaign has "ties to" Farrakhan and has answered the questions posed by Rove, having repeatedly denounced Farrakhan's anti-Semitic statements.

Media uncritically report McCain surprised by Cunningham's remarks despite Cunningham's history of using Obama's middle name

NBC's Kelly O'Donnell and CNN's John King asserted that Sen. John McCain was surprised by conservative radio talk-show host Bill Cunningham's controversial remarks about Sen. Barack Obama at a February 26 McCain rally, failing to note that Cunningham has previously referred to Obama as "Barack Hussein Obama" and "Barack Mohammed Hussein Obama." Fox News' Molly Henneberg suggested McCain could not have expected Cunningham to refer to Obama's middle name, even though Cunningham did just that on Fox News a month ago.

Hume, discussing Michelle Obama comment: "[T]here is this feeling" that Dems "are kind of embarrassed by patriotism"

When Fox News' E.D. Hill asked Brit Hume to explain what Michelle Obama meant by her recent comments, Hume stated: "[I]t means that she is a liberal, and maybe an arch-liberal." He later stated, "But I think this was something that she kind of thinks," adding, "[T]here is this feeling, and it has affected Democratic politicians for a long time, that they are kind of embarrassed by patriotism."
