CBS' Reid didn't note that experts, including Energy Dept., have rebutted assertion that expanded offshore drilling "will bring prices down"

CBS' Chip Reid stated, "[Sen. John] McCain says he now supports increased offshore drilling, as do 73 percent of Americans, because, he says, more oil supplies will bring prices down," and went on to claim, "[Sen. Barack] Obama says offshore drilling harms the environment, and looks to the past, not the future." But Reid provided no indication that Obama has directly rebutted the suggestion that "increased offshore oil drilling ... will bring prices down" by pointing to the conclusion of "most experts, even within the Bush Administration," that doing so would not affect gas prices for many years.

CBS' Reid repeated McCain's statement that Obama "impugn[ed]" his motives over GI bill, did not note McCain impugned Obama's motives

In a report about a back-and-forth between Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain over a recently passed GI bill, CBS' Chip Reid uncritically quoted from a McCain statement, in which McCain stated that, instead of "tak[ing] the time and trouble to understand this issue," Obama "prefers impugning the motives of his opponent." But, in the same statement, McCain himself impugned Obama's motives.

NBC's Nightly News reported on Democratic call for perjury investigation of Gonzales, but not the alleged lie

On NBC's Nightly News,
correspondent Chip Reid reported that senators "called for a special counsel to
investigate whether Attorney General
Alberto Gonzales perjured
himself on matters ranging from the administration's domestic eavesdropping to
the firing of U.S. attorneys," but he did not repeat any of the testimony
Gonzales gave that the senators alleged were false or misleading, nor did he
note FBI Director Robert Mueller's July 26 testimony before the House Judiciary
Committee, which called Gonzales' testimony into
question.

CBS, ABC ignored FBI raid of Weldon associates in corruption probe; NBC ignored key difference between Weldon raid and Reid land deal

Evening news programs on ABC and CBS made no mention that federal agents raided the homes of Rep. Curt Weldon's (R-PA) daughter and her business partner, as well as four additional locations, as part of a reported investigation into whether Weldon improperly assisted their company. NBC's Nightly News did report on the raids, but NBC devoted equal time to Democratic Sen. Harry Reid's announcement that he would issue updated disclosure forms to add more details of a land transaction, without noting a key difference: There are no allegations that Reid used his office to benefit from the land deal.

A Media Matters for America review of 12 reports on network evening news broadcasts covering President Bush's speeches and statements on Iraq, terrorism, and national security policy in the week preceding September 11 showed that the reports included responses from just five Democratic officials.

NBC's Reid returned to "cut-and-run" characterization of Democrats, echoed attacks on liberals as "angry" and "crazy"

NBC's Chip Reid contrasted the position of Democrats "who think we ought to get the troops out now" with the position of those "who think we ought to have a very carefully thought-out plan for getting them out down the road, but not cutting and running." Reid added that "it is amazing how angry" the "liberal anti-war wing of the Democratic Party" gets at Sen. Joseph Lieberman for defending President Bush.
