CNN's Foreman falsely claimed McCain was "getting Barack Obama's record right" on military spending

CNN's Tom Foreman falsely claimed that Sen. John McCain was "getting Barack Obama's record right" when McCain claimed that "during the primary" Obama told the group Caucus4Priorities "that he would cut defense spending by tens of billions of dollars"; Foreman also falsely suggested that Obama has only recently begun to advocate "increasing the size" of the military. In fact, Obama told Caucus4Priorities that he would cut "tens of billions of dollars in wasteful spending," not overall defense spending, and Obama repeatedly said during the primary season that he would increase the size of the military.

Weekly Standard's Hayes notes "significant problems" with Corsi book, but promotes problematic Freddoso book

On CNN, The Weekly Standard's Stephen Hayes said that Jerome Corsi's falsehood-laden book The Obama Nation "certainly sounds like it has some significant problems with it." Later, speaking about National Review writer David Freddoso, author of The Case Against Barack Obama, Hayes said, "[H]e's a serious reporter, and he's ... gone back, he's looked at Obama's votes in the Illinois state Senate." But Media Matters has documented numerous examples of misinformation in Freddoso's book, as well as in Corsi's.

On CNN, radio talk show host Lars Larson suggested Sen. Clinton is like Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction

On CNN Election Center, after The Washington Post's Dana Milbank said Sen. Hillary Clinton "must really look like some sort of a poltergeist" to Sen. Barack Obama, adding, "Each time he thinks he has finally finished off Hillary Clinton, she keeps coming back," radio host Lars Larson said, "I have got to tell you, he's thinking of the movie Poltergeist? I'm thinking of Fatal Attraction. And I'm waiting to find out when the bunny turns up in the stew pot."

CNN Election Center yet to report McCain's claim that he "voted to condemn" the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terror group is false

On July 9, CNN Election Center uncritically aired Sen. John McCain's false claim that he "voted to condemn" the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization "when a amendment was on the floor of the United States Senate" -- the Kyl-Lieberman amendment. However, a July 10 CNN.com blog post reported that "McCain was in New York instead of being in the Senate chamber for the vote in question. The McCain campaign admits the error." But CNN Election Center has yet to report that the McCain campaign has admitted that McCain's assertion was false.

CNN aired McCain's false suggestion that Obama opposed designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist group

CNN anchors Kyra Phillips and Campbell Brown each uncritically aired Sen. John McCain's false suggestion that Sen. Barack Obama opposed designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization. In fact, Obama co-sponsored a bill in 2007 that would have designated the group a terrorist organization.

CNN's Bash, Roberts, and Phillips ignored Hagee's comments linking Hurricane Katrina to gay pride parade

Reporting on a New Orleans campaign event at which Sen. John McCain's "carefully scripted imagery was interrupted by a voter's question about Pastor John Hagee," CNN's Dana Bash aired a clip of Hagee -- who has endorsed McCain -- saying of Hurricane Katrina, "What happened in New Orleans looked like the curse of God." But Bash did not air the portion of Hagee's comments in which he reaffirmed his previous assertion that Hurricane Katrina was at least in part the result of "sin" that Hagee identified as "a massive homosexual rally." CNN's John Roberts and Kyra Phillips similarly noted that Hagee said that "Katrina was God's punishment for sinful behavior in New Orleans" without mentioning that among the "sinful behavior" Hagee referenced was the gay pride parade.
