Like NBC colleagues Matthews and Russert, David Gregory suggested media can't adequately cover both Dem primary and McCain

On MSNBC's Race for the White House, host David Gregory, like NBC colleagues Tim Russert and Chris Matthews, suggested that it is not possible for the media to adequately cover both the Democratic primary race and Sen. John McCain. Gregory stated, "John McCain has not gotten a lot of scrutiny right now because we've had an historic Democratic race to contend with, but does that necessarily hold up as we go along?"

Wolffe identifies "free ride" for McCain over Hagee

On MSNBC, during a discussion of the focus on Sen. Barack Obama's relationship with Rev. Jeremiah Wright compared with that on Sen. John McCain's relationship with Pastor John Hagee, Newsweek's Richard Wolffe stated, "In some ways, John McCain is getting a free ride." Hagee has made controversial statements about Hurricane Katrina, women, homosexuality, the Catholic Church, and Islam.

David Gregory allowed Republican strategist to claim: "Barack Obama's talked about paratroopers in Islamabad"

MSNBC's David Gregory did not challenge Republican strategist Mike Murphy's false claim that "Barack Obama's talked about paratroopers in Islamabad, for heaven's sake." In fact, Obama has stated that "[i]f we have actionable intelligence about high-level Al Qaeda targets in Pakistan's border region, we must act if Pakistan will not or cannot." A Media Matters review found no examples of Obama calling for dropping "paratroopers in Islamabad" or anywhere else in Pakistan.

Ignoring pattern of politically expedient reversals, NBC's Gregory claimed McCain "is not going to pander to the right"

NBC's David Gregory stated: "John McCain is not going to pander to the right. He did that once and it didn't work." The Washington Post's Eugene Robinson and MSNBC analyst Pat Buchanan both agreed, asserting: "He's not going to do it." In fact, McCain has attempted to satisfy conservative Republicans by reversing his positions on issues such as taxes, immigration, and the religious right.

NBC's Gregory spread McCain's false claim that Romney "disparage[d] the service and courage" of WWII vet Bob Dole

NBC News' David Gregory let Sen. John McCain claim that Mitt Romney "disparage[d] the service and courage of an American hero" when he stated that Bob Dole is "probably the last person I would have wanted to have write a letter for me," a reference to a letter Dole wrote to Rush Limbaugh defending McCain. That night, Gregory also uncritically aired McCain's attack on Romney on NBC's Nightly News. But Romney made no comments disparaging Dole's military "service and courage" in his response to Dole's letter, as the full context of Romney's remarks make clear.

NBC's Nightly News repeatedly noted Huckabee's upcoming appearance on Tonight Show without reporting he crossed picket line

On January 2, despite numerous references on NBC's Nightly News to Mike Huckabee's appearance later that night on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, no one noted that Huckabee would be crossing a picket line in making the appearance.

Luntz and NBC's Gregory omitted context in dubbing Giuliani and McCain attacks among "the year's best quotes"

On Today, David Gregory and Frank Luntz discussed video clips of what Gregory called "the year's best quotes from the campaign trail." However, Gregory and Luntz omitted relevant context for two of the quotations -- an attack on Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton by Rudy Giuliani and a separate attack on Clinton by Sen. John McCain.

Matthews, repeatedly using "cocaine," falsely asserted Clinton strategist "raised drugs"

On The Chris Matthews Show, Matthews falsely asserted that Mark Penn "raised drugs again when I had him on Hardball." In fact, that entire Hardball segment was devoted to the controversy over remarks made by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's then-campaign co-chair about Sen. Barack Obama's past drug use, and Penn was not the first to "raise[]" the issue. On the December 14 edition of Hardball, Matthews accused Clinton's campaign of engaging in "dirty politics"; Matthews and his guests went on to say "cocaine" a total of 10 times during the show.

Gregory again suggested inconsistency in Dem candidates' statements on Iraq withdrawal

Discussing remarks by Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, and former
Sen. John Edwards, that they would not commit "by January of 2013, to have all
American troops out of Iraq," NBC's David Gregory described this as "a really
measured position," and asserted, "Edwards particularly, who was embracing the
left wing of the party's view that you have to end the war now, and the others
even voting for cutting off funding." But
Gregory's suggestion that Clinton's and Obama's current
positions are inconsistent with their
having "even vot[ed] for cutting off funding" -- an assertion that is itself
misleading -- is false. And Gregory
offered no evidence that
Edwards has shifted position either.

NBC's Gregory called Democrats' statements on Iraq "surprising[]" -- but they were consistent

NBC's David Gregory said it was "surprising[]" Sen Hillary Rodham Clinton, Sen. Barack Obama, and former Sen. John Edwards, speaking at a Democratic presidential debate, "would not promise a complete withdrawal of U.S. forces." But Gregory did not explain why he thought that this was "surprising[]," and in fact the statements of all three candidates were consistent with their previous positions.

NBC's Gregory, Fox's Wallace did not challenge Rove's false polling claims

Karl Rove asserted
that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton "enters the general election campaign with the
highest negatives of any candidate in the history of the Gallup Poll," and
added: "The only person who comes close is ... hers are at 49. The only
other candidate to come close was Al Gore with 34, I believe." In fact, Gallup's
polling results show that President Bush's unfavorability ratings as he entered
the 2004 general election campaign were consistently above what Rove claimed to
be "close[st]" to Clinton's unfavorability rating -- "Al Gore with 34" percent.

Sunday show hosts left key Rove scandal questions unasked

In appearances by Karl
Rove on
Sunday morning talk shows on
Fox, CBS, and NBC, not one interviewer
asked whether an August 19
Washington Post article was
accurate in stating that, according to White House officials, one of Rove's "two
basic rules" in putting together briefings for political appointees was "to make
sure they complied with the Hatch Act," a federal law that limits
political
activities by federal
employees. As the article noted, "the Office of the Special Counsel ... has
concluded that the Hatch Act was violated" during a briefing that was conducted
by a Rove aide for political appointees in the General Services
Administration.

NBC's Gregory allowed Kerrey to falsely characterize Edwards' speech

In a report on Today,
David Gregory allowed former Sen. Bob Kerrey to suggest that John
Edwards' recent speech questioning the use of the phrase "war on
terror" had ignored the threat of terrorism or spoken against fighting
terrorism. In fact, Edwards' speech identified several situations in
which "force is justified."
