The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Sen. John McCain spoke out against "land swaps, worthless land for valuable land" in connection with the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics and that "McCain is still a watchdog when it comes to federal spending, but he is a supporter of Chicago's bid for the 2016 Olympics, said his spokesman, Tucker Bounds." But the article did not note that McCain has himself reportedly facilitated land-swap deals that benefited wealthy developers who were major McCain donors.

Russert: "[T]he story about Senator McCain and lobbyists and ethics and money -- that continues" -- but not on Meet the Press

On February 24, Tim Russert stated on NBC's Today that "the story about Senator [John] McCain and lobbyists and ethics and money -- that continues. It's been on the front page of several papers for the last three days. ... We have not heard the end of that discussion about Senator McCain." However, since that date, "the story" has not "continue[d]" on Meet the Press.

Matthews: Spitzer allegations raise questions about "the judiciousness of these superdelegates"

On Hardball, Chris Matthews repeatedly referenced allegations that New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer was linked to a prostitution ring to call into question the role of superdelegates in the Democratic nominating process. Matthews stated: "I have to bring into question the prudence, the justice, the judiciousness of these superdelegates."

On Meet the Press, Brooks suggested McCain "only wrote two letters" as Commerce chairman

On Meet the Press, discussing the New York Times article about Sen. John McCain's relationship with a lobbyist, David Brooks said he "do[esn't] really understand the case" involving McCain and the letters he wrote to the Federal Communications Commission about an issue involving Paxson Communications, then suggested that McCain "only wrote two letters" as chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee. But the Times reported that McCain sent a series of letters to the FCC in a separate case, including "an unusually blunt letter to the head of the Federal Communications Commission, warning that he would try to overhaul the agency if it closed a broadcast ownership loophole."

NBC falsely suggested House Democrats refused to extend expiring FISA amendments

NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams stated that the Republicans "left the House chamber to protest the Democrats' refusal to renew the foreign intelligence surveillance law, which expires this week." In fact, the House voted on a measure to extend the law in question, the Protect America Act, for another 21 days, but all 195 Republicans who voted on the matter voted against it. Moreover, the "foreign intelligence surveillance law" doesn't expire this week; the Protect America Act, giving the president broad authority to intercept communications involving people in the U.S. without a warrant, expires. Even without its renewal, the government has the authority to conduct foreign intelligence surveillance.

Wash. Times again suggested without evidence that Hsu illegally funneled donations to Dems

For the second time in a week, The Washington Times
asserted in an article
that "[f]ugitive businessman Norman
Hsu ... donated more
than $1 million to senior Democrats" and that "some of his donations were made
through several people." However, Hsu
himself has donated only "$260,000 to Democratic Party groups and
federal candidates since 2004,"
as the article itself later noted, and the Wall Street Journal article that first
suggested Hsu had orchestrated illegal campaign contributions provided no
evidence that he had actually done so.

Beck falsely claimed William Paw gave Clinton "$200,000 in donations"

Glenn Beck -- apparently referring to Democratic donor William Paw -- falsely
stated that Paw, who Beck said
had an income of
$46,000, sent Clinton "I think $200,000
in donations." In fact, according to the Federal Election Commission's donor
database, William Paw himself donated $4,200 to Hillary Clinton's campaign and
$11,800 to all Democratic candidates beginning in October 2005, while, according
to the Los Angeles Times, the
seven members of the Paw family "gave $213,000, including $55,000 to Clinton and
$14,000 to candidates for state-level offices in New York." Beck's guest,
American Spectator's R. Emmett
Tyrrell Jr., stated that Norman Hsu, a businessman and Clinton
"bundler," is one of several
"shadowy Asian figures" who have been involved with campaign finance violations
associated with the Clintons.

Wash. Post's Solomon blamed editor for deletion about GOP fundraiser

During a washingtonpost.com discussion, when John Solomon was asked why a recent
article he co-wrote on fundraisers did not mention Alan B. Fabian -- Mitt Romney's
recently indicted former national finance co-chairman -- he did not mention
Fabian but claimed that the article included a passage on Robert Lichfield,
another Romney fundraiser facing several lawsuits, but that "it was edited
out," adding that this "sometimes happens ... to make
room for late-breaking news."

NY Times editorial criticizing "bundlers" didn't mention Fabian

A New York Times editorial
criticizing presidential candidates' use of "bundlers" stated that "Senator
Hillary Clinton [D-NY] has been burned twice lately by so-called bundlers," and
made apparent references to Clinton bundlers Norman Hsu and Sant Chatwal.
The Times went on to note that
"[o]ther candidates in both parties have been similarly embarrassed" but offered
no further details and made no mention of Alan B. Fabian, a Maryland bundler for
former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's campaign who was indicted last month on
fraud and money laundering charges.

Wash. Post editorial noted Edwards donor's indictment, ignored report that Edwards was absolved of wrongdoing

A Washington Post editorial
arguing for legally mandated full disclosure of campaign donation "bundlers"
left out key facts about the two cases that it cited, Geoffrey Fieger and Norman
Hsu. The editorial did not note
that prosecutors have
reportedly
confirmed that John
Edwards'
campaign was unaware of
alleged illegal contributions made by Fieger and absolved the campaign
of any wrongdoing; similarly, the
editorial failed to note that the Wall Street Journal article it cited
offered no evidence
implicating Hillary Clinton with
regard to Hsu.

On Hardball, DeLay falsely claimed GOP "demanded that [Foley] resign from Congress"

Discussing whether Sen. Larry Craig will resign
following his guilty plea for misdemeanor disorderly conduct, Tom DeLay falsely
claimed that Mark Foley "resigned from Congress because the Republicans
demanded that he resign from Congress," when sexually explicit Internet
messages he had sent to former congressional pages became public. In fact,
Dennis Hastert stated in October 2006 that "Foley resigned almost
immediately upon the outbreak of this information, and so we really didn't have
a chance to ask him to resign."
