Stephanopoulos falsely suggested Obama "now" aligned with McCain on more troops in Afghanistan -- but Obama has called for more troops for years

ABC News' George Stephanopoulos falsely suggested that Sen. Barack Obama shifted positions on increasing U.S. troops in Afghanistan and is "now" aligned with the position of Sen. John McCain. In fact, Obama has been calling for increasing U.S. troops in Afghanistan since at least 2006.

Stephanopoulos did not challenge Graham's false suggestion that Obama "borrow[ed] money from" Rezko "to build his house"

On This Week, George Stephanopoulos did not challenge Sen. Lindsey Graham's false suggestion that Sen. Barack Obama "borrow[ed] money" from Antoin "Tony" Rezko "to build his house." In fact, the Obamas established a land trust to purchase the property and took out a $1.32 million mortgage on the home, financed through the Northern Trust Co. And the Obamas did not "build" the house -- they purchased an existing home.

Stephanopoulos left unchallenged McCain's assertion that "every time you have cut capital gains taxes, revenues have increased"

This Week's George Stephanopoulos did not challenge Sen. John McCain's assertion that "history shows every time you have cut capital gains taxes, revenues have increased -- going back to Jack Kennedy." Stephanopoulos did not note that, notwithstanding a potential short-term revenue increase, many economists have challenged the claim that revenue goes up over the long term as a result of capital gains tax rates being cut.

Stephanopoulos failed to confront McCain with controversial Coburn remark that Obama cited when questioned about Ayers

On This Week, Sen. John McCain asserted that Sen. Barack Obama's reference to Sen. Tom Coburn when Obama was asked about William Ayers was an "incredible statement" that "borders on outrageous." However, at no point during the exchange did George Stephanopoulos point out the actual comments Coburn made that elicited Obama's reference to Coburn, much less confront McCain with the issue of whether he agreed with Coburn's comments.

Right-wing radio hosts suggested "damn good" Ayers question to Stephanopoulos day before Dem debate

During the April 16 debate, George Stephanopoulos asked Sen. Barack Obama to explain his "relationship" with former Weather Underground Organization member William Ayers and to "explain to Democrats why it won't be a problem." The previous day, Stephanopoulos appeared on The Sean Hannity Show and New York radio station WOR's The Steve Malzberg Show, where both Hannity and Malzberg suggested to Stephanopoulos that he ask Obama about Ayers.

Media criticize ABC moderators for "flat-out repulsive" debate performances, "specious and gossipy" subject matter

Numerous media figures have criticized George Stephanopoulos and Charles Gibson, moderators of the Democratic presidential debate on ABC, or the subject matter of the event, in part or in whole, as "shoddy [and] despicable," "specious and gossipy," "cringe-worthy," "banal," consisting of "tabloid trivia," "flat-out repulsive," "embarrassing," "seem[ingly] slanted against [Sen. Barack] Obama," "shameful," and "an outrage."

Ignoring McCain's reversal, Stephanopoulos let Lieberman claim McCain "was much more forward-leaning on immigration reform" than Clinton, Obama

On ABC's This Week, Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman claimed that Sen. John McCain "actually stepped out and was much more forward-leaning on immigration reform than Barack Obama was -- Senator Clinton wasn't involved in those negotiations." Host George Stephanopoulos did not point out that McCain abandoned his previous support for comprehensive immigration legislation during his campaign for the Republican nomination.

Stephanopoulos, Politico allowed Thompson's claims about his abortion record to go unchallenged

In an interview on This Week,
George Stephanopoulos did not challenge Fred Thompson's assertions that "I think
... that Roe versus Wade should be
overturned" and that "I've had a pro-life voting record my entire career on
every conceivable issue that came up before us for almost a decade." Similarly
the Politico reported that
Thompson "trumpeted his own anti-abortion credentials after receiving the
endorsement of the National Right to Life Committee." Neither Stephanopoulos nor the Politico noted that Thompson has
reportedly expressed support for abortion rights, as well as for Roe v. Wade.

Stephanopoulos understated Dem support for keeping reduced military presence in Iraq

ABC's George Stephanopoulos said that "even some Democrats have said that's the mission that needs to be done in Iraq over a long period of time," referring to functions of "border security, going after the terrorists, [and] training and equipping the Iraqi forces" laid out by Defense Secretary Robert Gates. But Stephanopoulos understated the extent to which Democrats have advocated such a role for U.S. troops in Iraq; many Democratic proposals have called for keeping a residual force in Iraq to deal with such issues, including a bill that garnered the support of a majority of congressional Democrats earlier this year.
GMA casts Gonzales scandals as partisan: "For Democrats, it's another scalp to hang on the wall"

On Good Morning America, correspondent David Wright asserted that
"[w]ere it not
for the scandals, [President] Bush
had hoped to make"
outgoing Attorney General Alberto Gonzales
"the first
Hispanic justice on the U.S. Supreme Court." Wright also reported that Gonzales' resignation
"is being welcomed on both sides of the aisle" because "[f]or
Democrats, it's another scalp to hang on the wall; and for Republicans, it's a
huge distraction that now goes away." In fact, several Republicans have
joined Democrats in calling for Gonzales to resign.
