CNN's Borger claimed Obama's decision to forgo public financing gives McCain "opening" to attack Obama's character, didn't note McCain's loan

On The Situation Room, Gloria Borger asserted that Sen. Barack Obama's decision to forgo public financing for the general election "is going to become a character issue for Barack Obama, because ... [i]t gives [Sen.] John McCain an opening to say, 'This is not the man you think you know.' " But Borger did not note that McCain has also given Obama an "opening" on the issue of public financing: a loan agreement McCain signed during the primary season that could have forced him to remain in the race -- even if he had no chance of winning -- in order to be eligible for public matching funds to repay the loan.

Borger baselessly claimed "recent polls" show that "suburban women ... don't like Barack Obama very much"

CNN's Gloria Borger asserted, "[Sen. John] McCain really believes that he has an opportunity to win over these suburban women who, in recent polls, have shown that they don't like [Sen.] Barack Obama very much." But of the two recent polls identified by Media Matters that reported results for the subcategory of suburban women, one found that Obama led McCain, while the other, providing results specifically for "white suburban women," gave McCain the lead, but reportedly within the margin of error; in neither case were results reported for likability of the two candidates among suburban women.

Despite McCain's numerous falsehoods, CNN's Blitzer and Borger repeat "maverick" and "straight-talker" characterizations of McCain

On Late Edition, Wolf Blitzer stated that Sen. John McCain uses "his reputation out there as an independent, sometimes described as a maverick" to woo voters. In response, Gloria Borger said: "I think he's going to do it by saying that 'I'm a straight-talker; I tell the truth. You may not agree with me, but you ought to believe what I say.' " But as Media Matters has documented, contrary to his media-promoted image as a "straight-talker," McCain has promulgated numerous falsehoods in his campaign.

CNN's Borger falsely asserted McCain "absolutely" "called for [Rumsfeld] to be fired"

On The Situation Room, CNN senior political analyst Gloria Borger falsely claimed that "[Sen. John] McCain has said over and over again, you know, 'I would have fired [former Secretary of Defense] Donald Rumsfeld.' ... [H]e called for him to be fired while -- in the Senate." In fact, McCain did not call for Rumsfeld to resign or to be fired.

CNN's Borger said Clinton will "mimic[]" McCain by ... campaigning

Gloria Borger stated that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is going to question Sen. Barack Obama's experience and accomplishments on the campaign trail "without being negative and nasty, while at the same time, she kind of mimics John McCain and goes out and chats with every voter she can." Borger did not explain how "go[ing] out and chat[ting] with every voter" amounts to "mimic[king] John McCain."

Ignoring Obama's actual statements, CNN and Fox News claimed Obama "waffled" on driver's licenses

CNN's Anderson Cooper and Gloria Borger, and Fox News' Megyn Kelly claimed that
Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) "waffled" during the Democratic presidential debate on
the issue of driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants. In fact, Obama
stated: "Look, I have already said, I support the notion that we have to deal
with public safety and that driver's licenses at the state level can make that
happen." When debate moderator Wolf Blitzer asked him to respond "yes or no" to
the question, "Do you support driver's licenses for illegal immigrants?" Obama
answered, "Yes."

CNN's Borger asserted Clinton has "a bit of a credibility problem" on health care, despite contrary poll

CNN's Gloria Borger claimed that Sen. Hillary Clinton "has a bit of a
credibility problem when it comes to health care because ... she had the debacle
in 1993." But polling shows that, if Clinton were
to be elected president, most voters believe her past experience during the
Clinton
administration would help her in reforming health care.

Hume, Borger, Cavuto falsely reported Sen. Johnson would be replaced if "incapacitated"

Several media outlets have
reported that if Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD), who recently had brain
surgery, were "incapacitated" or "unable to serve in any
way," that South Dakota's
Republican governor would be responsible for selecting his replacement.
However, the U.S. Constitution does not provide for circumstances in which an
"incapacitated" senator can be replaced.

Despite McCain's many hedges, Borger asserted that "[n]o one would accuse McCain of equivocating on anything"

In her U.S. News & World Report column,
Gloria Borger asserted that "[n]o one would accuse [Sen. John]
McCain [R-AZ] of equivocating on anything." But McCain has done just that
on a variety of issues, including tax cuts for the wealthy, abortion, teaching
intelligent design to public school students, and the Confederate flag.

Following House Speaker Dennis Hastert's press conference, numerous media outlets trumpeted the news that Hastert took "responsibility" for the Mark Foley scandal but ignored his later statement, during that same press conference, that "I haven't done anything wrong."

In Foley scandal, conservatives find plenty of excuses and plenty of people to blame (other than the GOP)

Seeking to minimize the extent to which the House Republican leadership can be blamed for the scandal surrounding former Rep. Mark Foley, several congressional Republicans, media figures, and conservatives have posited various conspiracy theories and placed blame on just about everyone and everything else -- including liberals, Democrats, the media, "politically correct culture," gays in Congress, and congressional pages.
