Fineman called Clinton's comments on Obama's religion "positively Nixonian"

Discussing Sen. Hillary Clinton's answer to a question about whether she believed Sen. Barack Obama is a Muslim, Newsweek editor Howard Fineman said that Clinton's answer was "positively Nixonian in its pauses and innuendos." In fact, Clinton's first three words in response to the question -- "You don't believe that Senator Obama is a Muslim?" -- were, "Of course not."

Fineman falsely asserted Obama "admitt[ed] he can't manage his way out of a paper bag" during Las Vegas debate

Newsweek chief political correspondent Howard Fineman falsely claimed during MSNBC's coverage following the January 15 Democratic presidential candidates debate in Las Vegas that Sen. Barack Obama "admitt[ed] that he can't manage his way out of a paper bag while he's running for president of the United States."

Fineman's strawman: Dems advocate leaving Iraq "overnight"

On Countdown, Newsweek chief political correspondent
Howard Fineman asserted that "[t]he problem that the Democrats have got, indeed, that all America has got, is that having gone into Iraq the way we
did, there is, in the opinion of many fair-minded observers, chaos and hell to pay if we
get out overnight." While Fineman did not specify which "Democrats" have
advocated withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq "overnight," Democrats support several plans that call for a "gradual"
withdrawal or a "phased redeployment" of U.S. troops from Iraq, with some troops
remaining in Iraq for specified missions after the withdrawal of most combat
troops.

Fineman, Matthews mind meld: cite Dem satisfaction with candidates as harbinger of future Dem dissatisfaction

On Hardball,
Newsweek's Howard Fineman suggested that a recent poll
finding that 77 percent of Democrats and "Democrat Leaners" are
satisfied with their party's choice of presidential nominees, while 52
percent of Republicans and "Republican Leaners" said the same, meant that "both
parties are going to nominate somebody that they're sort of not wildly
enthusiastic about, and then there is going to be seven months ... for
everybody to have buyer's remorse big time." Chris Matthews asserted that the supposed dissatisfaction
could lead to a "third party" bid.

Media suggested conservative Christians are particularly outraged by Foley scandal

In their coverage of the Foley scandal's political effects, numerous media figures have suggested that conservative Christians are most likely to react negatively to the Foley scandal. In doing so, they presume that so-called "values voters" are more concerned than others with protecting children.

Despite GOP attacks, Hotline's Todd claimed that Republicans invoked national security "in a positive" way in '02 and '04

In fact, Republicans launched numerous attacks on Democrats such as former Sen. Max Cleland in 2002 and Sen. John Kerry in 2004.

Media outlets suggested Sen. Clinton's critique of Rumsfeld was motivated purely by politics

Several news outlets portrayed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's harsh criticism of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld as a purely political maneuver to "find the exact middle" in the Democratic Party or to position herself for a potential 2008 presidential run.

On The Chris Matthews Show, CBS News contributor and U.S. News & World Report contributing editor Gloria Borger stated that former Sen. John Edwards might be able to defeat Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination because "he's a more authentic person than Hillary Clinton." Borger's comment met with agreement from the panel.
