BillOReilly.com link to story of "sex offenders living under a bridge": "Those weren't veterans John Edwards, they were sex offenders"

A link on BillOReilly.com, the website of Fox News and conservative radio talk-show host Bill O'Reilly, was titled "Those weren't veterans John Edwards, they were sex offenders," and linked to an Associated Press article about Florida's efforts "to dissolve a community of sex offenders living under a bridge." Media Matters for America has documented the back-and-forth between O'Reilly and former Sen. John Edwards over homelessness and homeless veterans.

Attacking Edwards, O'Reilly baselessly suggested New Orleans homeless encampment doesn't exist

Fox News' Bill O'Reilly baselessly suggested that a homeless encampment under an overpass in New Orleans that former Sen. John Edwards mentioned in a speech did not exist, saying, "[W]e called the Edwards campaign and asked where exactly is that bridge so we could help those people. Apparently, they don't know or they wouldn't tell us. The Edwards campaign can't pinpoint the bridge." Numerous media outlets have reported recently on a large encampment of homeless people under an overpass in downtown New Orleans.

Wash. Post falsely claimed "three leading Democrats" in presidential race have "refus[ed] ... to acknowledge the indisputable military progress" in Iraq

Even though Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards have all acknowledged that the U.S. military has made progress in reducing the violence in Iraq, a Washington Post editorial asserted that "[t]he refusal of the [three leading Democratic presidential] candidates to acknowledge the indisputable military progress of the past year is troubling."

Beck called "Comrade Clinton" a "liberal fascist," Edwards "a communist"

Glenn Beck asserted that Hillary Clinton is "a liberal fascist ... who wants to redistribute the wealth in this country the way she believes is good for everybody," adding that her desire "to get back to the appropriate balance of power between government and the market ... sounds like the Soviet Union," and that "Comrade Clinton has railed against the excesses of the offensive executive pay packages and an out of whack tax code that favors the wealthy while holding down the middle class." Beck also said of John Edwards: "Now, put a red star on his furry head. He's a communist."

Beck falsely claimed Dem candidates have not supported striking writers

On his CNN Headline News program, Glenn Beck repeatedly suggested that the top Democratic presidential candidates have not shown support for the ongoing Writers Guild strike. In fact, all of the Democratic front-runners have expressed support for the striking writers. John Edwards joined them on a Los Angeles picket line, and Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton each issued statements of support for the writers. The candidates also withdrew from a planned December 10 CBS News debate, forcing its cancellation.

Olbermann: O'Reilly "laughing at" Edwards' statistic about homeless veterans

MSNBC's Keith Olbermann criticized Fox News' Bill O'Reilly for ridiculing Sen. John Edwards' assertion that "200,000 men and women who wore uniforms and served this country patriotically as veterans will go to sleep under bridges and on grates." Referring to O'Reilly's pledge to radio host Ed Schultz that "if you know where there's a veteran sleeping under a bridge, you call me immediately, and we will make sure that man does not do it, is not there" after Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America executive director Paul Rieckhoff noted it would cost $15,000 to keep a homeless veteran off the streets for a year, Olbermann said: "OK, Billy, put your money where your mouth is. House every homeless vet tonight, just tonight. That'll be about $6,435,000."

Russert misrepresented Dems' Iraq statements to suggest shift in "emphasis" from previous debate

On MSNBC's postdebate coverage of the January 15 Democratic presidential debate, Tim Russert misrepresented the positions on Iraq articulated that evening by Barack Obama, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and John Edwards to suggest a shift in "emphasis" from their statements on the issue during a September 26, 2007, debate, which Russert also moderated.

CNN's Beck asked of Edwards: "[W]hy not just start wearing the Soviet star on your head and the Workers World Party?"

On his CNN Headline News show, Glenn Beck said of John Edwards: "I listened to him last night give a speech, and, I mean, why not just start wearing the Soviet star on your head and the Workers World Party?" Beck added: "Good Lord in heaven. Was it a mistake for him to go after her [Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton] for crying and then also to join this great Soviet state?"

O'Reilly claimed Edwards "has no clue" over claim about homeless veterans

On The O'Reilly Factor, Bill O'Reilly stated: "As for John Edwards, good grief, this guy has no clue." He then aired a clip of Edwards saying: "And tonight, 200,000 men and women who wore our uniform proudly and served this country courageously as veterans will go to sleep under bridges and on grates. We're better than this." O'Reilly commented: "The only thing sleeping under a bridge is that guy's brain. Ten million illegal alien workers are sending billions of dollars back home, and Edwards is running around saying nobody has any money. Hard to believe." While it is unclear what O'Reilly found "hard to believe," Edwards' claim about the number of homeless veterans is supported by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

On Hannity & Colmes, Luntz misrepresented Edwards comment about campaign finances

Referring to a video clip of John Edwards discussing campaign finances at an appearance in Emmetsburg, Iowa, Republican pollster Frank Luntz stated: "But the problem with Edwards is, whenever he brings up money, people remember how wealthy he is, and they have a hard time listening to him complain about other candidates spending money when he himself is worth dozens and dozens of millions of dollars." But Edwards did not "bring[] up money" during his appearance in Emmetsburg; rather, he was responding to a question about campaign finances from an attendee at the event.
On his radio show, Mark
Levin said, "I see on the home page of our friend Drudge -- the Drudge Report
-- 'Developing, National Enquirer: John Edwards love child

Kaus touted Enquirer story about Edwards "love child," didn't note Young's claim in story* that he is the father

Slate.com's Mickey Kaus touted a National Enquirer article, the headline of which was posted on the Drudge Report website, stating that former John Edwards campaign worker Rielle Hunter is six months pregnant with Edwards' baby. But neither Drudge nor Kaus have noted that the story contained a statement from the lawyer for Edwards confidante Andrew Young stating that "Young is the father of Ms. Hunter's unborn child." Don Imus on his radio show said about the story: "[W]hat does that say about your judgment, to be -- be president of the United States if you're going around impregnating people?"

Wash. Post's Milbank compares Edwards' haircuts to undocumented workers at Romney's home while "he's complaining about illegal immigrants"
On Countdown, Keith Olbermann
asked Dana Milbank about the repeated references in
The Washington
Post
to the cost of John
Edwards' haircuts, including in his
own column. Milbank replied that he is "guilty of the haircut
slander" and added: "[T]he $400 dollar haircut speaks of that the
same way Romney having the illegal immigrants twice return to work in his home
even ... as he's complaining about illegal immigrants." While Milbank identified
an inconsistency between Romney's actions and his stated views, he offered no justification
for suggesting a similar inconsistency in Edwards' efforts to fight poverty
while paying for expensive
haircuts.

O'Reilly suggested celebrities' support for Edwards is akin to that of serial killers Dahmer and Gacy

On The
O'Reilly Factor, Bill O'Reilly noted that Harry Belafonte had endorsed John Edwards and commented: "Oh, I
guess that means Edwards has a lock on the Fidel Castro vote." After noting that actors Danny Glover and Tim Robbins also support Edwards, O'Reilly stated:
"[W]hy don't you get Jeffrey
Dahmer, John Wayne
Gacy. ...
Look, these people are
so kooky."

In "Front-runners" profile of Edwards, four Wash. Post pieces mentioned expensive haircuts

In its "Front-runners" package on John Edwards, The Washington Post published four pieces that each
highlighted the cost or "expensive"
nature of Edwards' haircuts. The media have extensively
scrutinized Edwards' haircuts, his North Carolina estate, and his work as an
adviser to a hedge fund, often baselessly suggesting that they conflict with his
anti-poverty campaigning.
