Fox News' Major Garrett uncritically aired an audio clip of Focus on the Family's Tom Minnery asserting that in a June 2006 speech, Sen. Barack Obama was "diminishing the idea that people of Christian faith have anything to say." In fact, in that speech, Obama said: "[W]hat I am suggesting is this -- secularists are wrong when they ask believers to leave their religion at the door before entering into the public square. Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, William Jennings Bryan, Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King -- the majority of the great reformers in American history -- were not only motivated by faith, but repeatedly used religious language to argue for their cause."

Fox News' Garrett falsely claimed the Golden Rule, Obama's "favorite Scripture," is not, in fact, "exactly rooted in Scripture"

Reporting on Sen. Barack Obama's answer to a question about his "favorite Scripture," Fox News' Major Garrett asserted that "Obama's answer [was] not exactly rooted in Scripture but [was] in the ballpark," and then aired a clip of Obama saying: "[T]he Golden Rule. It's very simple. I mean, it's a very simple concept. I think what he asks of me is that I treat my brother as -- and my sister -- as I would have them treat me." Contrary to Garrett's claim, Obama's answer is, in fact, "rooted in Scripture."

Fox News' Garrett distorted Obama's debate comments on Wright, falsely claiming they contradicted his March speech

Fox News' Major Garrett falsely claimed that Sen. Barack Obama's comments about Rev. Jeremiah Wright made during the April 16 Democratic presidential debate were "in conflict with his speech on that very subject." But in purporting to contrast Obama's reference during the debate to "comments not made by me but somebody who is associated with me that I have disowned" with Obama's assertion during his March 18 speech that "I can no more disown [Wright] than I can disown the black community," Garrett left out the next two sentences said in the debate exchange during which Obama made clear that he was not claiming to have "disowned" Wright, but to have disowned "[t]he comments" Wright made.

Media outlets falsely claim Obama contradicted himself regarding Wright statements

Several media figures have falsely claimed that Sen. Barack Obama contradicted previous statements when he said during a March 18 speech on race: "Did I ever hear him [Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's former pastor] make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in the church? Yes." In fact, Obama previously asserted he had not been present for particular statements Wright made that were repeated by various media outlets and that spurred the recent controversy. He did not claim to have never heard Wright make "remarks that could be considered controversial."

Garrett claimed Obama "denounced ... but would not reject" "Farrakhan's previous anti-Semitic remarks" but didn't report that Obama called them "unacceptable and reprehensible"

Fox News' Major Garrett asserted that, in a debate, Sen. Barack Obama "said he denounced [Nation of Islam leader Louis] Farrakhan's previous anti-Semitic remarks but would not reject them." But Garrett did not air or mention Obama's response to moderator Tim Russert's initial question about Farrakhan, in which he said, "I have been very clear in my denunciation of Minister Farrakhan's anti-Semitic comments. I think that they are unacceptable and reprehensible."

Fox's Garrett falsely claimed CBO determined that revised SCHIP bill "would cover fewer children"

In reporting on the House's vote to pass a revised bill expanding the State
Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), Fox News' Major Garrett asserted,
"Congress' own accounting office said the new SCHIP bill would cover fewer
children and at greater cost than the original bill." In fact, the Congressional
Budget Office said that the revised bill would cover as many children in SCHIP
and Medicaid as the original bill would have covered.

Fox News' Garrett and others mischaracterized or omitted Gore's response to Inhofe on his energy use

During a report on Al Gore's testimony before
the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Fox News' Major
Garrett reported that, in response to Sen. James Inhofe's question,
"Are you ready to change the way you live?" a reference to
Gore's documentary, Gore replied that "he didn't have to
because he purchases a variety of environmental credits." In fact, Gore
indicated in his response that he had changed his lifestyle and is continuing
to do so.

Fox News whitewashes evangelical hostility to Romney's faith

While other media outlets, in
their coverage of Mitt Romney's presidential campaign, have addressed the
longtime evangelical hostility to Romney's Mormon faith, Fox News has largely
avoided the subject and has responded to other media coverage of the issue by alleging media bias or, in the case of one guest, accusing liberals of anti-Mormon bigotry.

AP, Fox's Garrett, ABC's Tapper, <em>Wash.</em><em> Post</em>'s Baker reported false GOP claims on Iraq resolution debate

The Associated Press, Fox
News' Major Garrett, ABC's Jake Tapper, and <em>The</em> <em>Washington Post</em>'s Peter Baker all reported or suggested that Senate Democrats wanted to limit debate on an
Iraq resolution to two proposals and not include a third proposal by Republican
Sen. Judd Gregg. In fact, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said during debate
on the Senate floor that he had offered to schedule an up-or-down vote on all
three resolutions but "was turned down" by the Republican
leadership.
