Touting Wash. Post article, Politico's Vogel baselessly suggested that Obama got a "sweetheart mortgage"

On a Hardball segment concerning the chances that Sen. Barack Obama would select Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) as a running mate, Ken Vogel said: "[L]et's not forget that Obama, too, was the subject of a story in The Washington Post, actually, suggesting that he got a good deal on his mortgage. So unless they want an all-sweetheart-mortgage ticket, I think this is probably not the way to go." In fact, the Washington Post article provided no evidence that Obama had received preferential treatment in obtaining his mortgage.

MSNBC's Barnicle misrepresented Obama's comments about gas tax holiday, overstated savings

On Hardball, Mike Barnicle said of Sen. Barack Obama's reaction to Sen. John McCain's proposal for a summer gas-tax holiday: "[P]oliticians have got to be very, very careful when they tell people living right at the margin, right at the edge, that $30 a week isn't a whole lot of money." But what Obama has said of McCain's proposal is that "[i]t would save you a total of about $28 for the entire year" -- not "$30 a week" -- and several analyses support Obama's claim.

CNBC's Harwood still referring to McCain as a "maverick"

On Morning Joe, John Harwood once again described Sen. John McCain as a "maverick," claiming that McCain's criticism of the media is in part "a way for John McCain, who has been such a maverick, to try to unify the Republican Party." Harwood has repeatedly referred to McCain as a "maverick" or having a "maverick brand."

After lambasting sourcing of NY Times' McCain story, Scarborough, Barnicle, and Buchanan ignore anonymous sourcing in Vanity Fair article about Clinton

Discussing in February a New York Times article about Sen. John McCain's ties to lobbyists, MSNBC's Joe Scarborough, Mike Barnicle, and Pat Buchanan criticized the Times for its use of anonymous sources. However, Scarborough, Barnicle, and Buchanan offered no such criticism in their discussions of a Vanity Fair article that also relied on anonymous sourcing in purporting to report on "post-presidential sexual indiscretions" by former President Bill Clinton.

Will pundits who blasted Howard Dean in 2003 over troop-numbers response question McCain's fitness following his Iraq troop-level falsehood?

During a May 29 campaign appearance, Sen. John McCain falsely stated that U.S. troops in Iraq "have [been] drawn down to pre-surge levels." As the Associated Press reported, "[T]here are 17 brigades in Iraq" right now, as opposed to the 15 brigades in place before the increase. In 2003, then-Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean was criticized in the media for his response to a question about the number of active-duty soldiers, with Tim Russert and others questioning his fitness to be commander in chief. In light of McCain's troop-surge falsehood and numerous national security gaffes, will the media similarly question his suitability to be commander in chief?

On MSNBC, purveyors of sexism Buchanan and Barnicle purported to assess role of sexism in presidential campaign coverage

On Morning Joe, Mike Barnicle and Pat Buchanan discussed whether "sexism [will] play a key role in what went wrong" in Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, with Barnicle saying that "reality," not sexism, "will play a much larger role in what has happened," and Buchanan asserting that, while "there's resistance to a woman being the nominee," "the fact that she's a woman has helped her." But Barnicle has referred to Clinton as "looking like everyone's first wife standing outside a probate court." Buchanan has described Clinton's voice as "rising to the level that every husband in America at one time or another has heard."

Despite McCain not being a Catholic, Barnicle asserted McCain "absolutely comes off as" an "Irish Catholic working-class hero"

After claiming that non-Catholics Ronald Reagan and Jack Kemp "come off as Catholics, in a way," Chris Matthews asked Mike Barnacle, "Is [Sen. John] McCain one of them?" Barnicle replied: "Absolutely. John McCain absolutely comes off as one of them, Irish Catholic working-class hero." According to the Associated Press, McCain "has long identified himself as an Episcopalian" but now says "he is a Baptist and has been for years."

Ignoring conservative record, MSNBC's Barnicle claimed that McCain is "in the middle"

On Morning Joe, Mike Barnicle claimed that while in "most campaigns," "Republicans begin on the right for their campaign and come to the middle for the fall," John McCain is "in the middle and he has to swing right for the primaries." In fact, McCain has already shifted rightward on immigration and taxes, and McCain himself has asserted that he is a "mainstream conservative."
