MSNBC's Witt did not note McCain falsehoods in Anbar statement or in later campaign statement purporting to defend it

On MSNBC Live, Alex Witt uncritically repeated a statement by McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds defending a false statement by Sen. John McCain made the previous day during an interview with CBS, the video clip of which CBS edited to expunge the falsehood. But Witt did not note that Bounds inaccurately represented McCain's original statement or that McCain's statement was itself false.

On MSNBC Live, the news channel displayed on-screen text featuring purported quotes from Iraqis about Sen. Barack Obama under the headline, "What Iraqis Think of Obama." One purported quote from an Iraqi engineer said, "Obama Is a Muslim & He Will Not Win Because of That." MSNBC did not note in a caption or otherwise that Obama is not, in fact, a Muslim.

MSNBC's Hall didn't challenge Pfotenhauer's claim that Obama "fought funding" for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan

MSNBC's Tamron Hall failed to challenge the assertions of Nancy Pfotenhauer, an adviser for Sen. John McCain, that Sen. Barack Obama "fought funding for our troops on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan over a year ago" and was "withholding funds for our troops who are in combat in Iraq and in Afghanistan." Hall did not note that Obama has cast several votes for war-funding legislation, nor did she note that McCain himself has voted against legislation funding the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Several media outlets, including CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and The Washington Post, have uncritically reported Sen. John McCain's speech attacking Sen. Barack Obama for "outlining a plan" for Afghanistan and Iraq before his upcoming visit to the region without noting that in the same speech, McCain outlined his own "Comprehensive Strategy For Victory In Afghanistan," but hasn't visited that country since December 2006.

While discussing Sen. Barack Obama's upcoming trip to the Middle East and Europe, NBC News' Andrea Mitchell claimed that in some "parts of the Midwest and Appalachia, and other parts of key battleground states," seeing Obama "celebrated in Europe might seem to be an implicit criticism of America."

Brzezinski continues pattern of MSNBC hosts not challenging false assertion that McCain called for Rumsfeld's resignation

On MSNBC Live, Mika Brzezinski failed to correct Mitt Romney's false assertion that Sen. John McCain "said that [Donald] Rumsfeld needed to go." Although a McCain spokesman reportedly acknowledged that McCain "did not call for his resignation," MSNBC hosts have repeatedly failed to correct guests' assertions that he did so.

Two segments on MSNBC Live referenced Sen. Hillary Clinton's new hairdo, with one of the segments featuring a discussion "[l]ive from Capitol Hill" with MSNBC congressional correspondent Mike Viqueira, who said, "I'm not really crazy about standing here talking about a senator's hair, especially Senator Clinton's hair, but I'll just say this: When it comes to senatorial hair, she's way ahead of the game."

On MSNBC Live, Andrea Mitchell again failed to challenge the false assertion that Hurricane Katrina did not result in any oil spills, despite a report prepared for the U.S. Minerals Management Service that found 5,552 barrels of oil and petroleum products were spilled from Outer Continental Shelf structures as a result of damage caused by Katrina.

Whose "place for politics"? MSNBC devoted four segments to GOP strategists and conservatives debating how to attack Obama

On July 14, MSNBC aired four segments on MSNBC Live, between 9 a.m. and noon ET, during which Republican strategists and conservatives debated, without the presence of a Democrat, how to best attack Sen. Barack Obama. At no point during the day did MSNBC host Democratic strategists, without the presence of a Republican, to discuss how to attack Sen. John McCain.

Fox News joins MSNBC in allowing GOP strategist Tantaros to characterize Obama as a "fancy lad"

A week after referring on MSNBC to Sens. Barack Obama and John Kerry as "two Ivy League fancy lads," GOP strategist Andrea Tantaros again referred to Obama as a "fancy lad," this time on Fox News' America's Newsroom. In neither case was her remark challenged by the anchors of the shows.

Discussing McCain's immigration flip-flop, MSNBC's Brewer asked, "[H]ow is that really changing?"

Responding to Democratic strategist Keith Boykin's assertion that Sen. John McCain "switched positions" on immigration, MSNBC's Contessa Brewer asked "how?" and described McCain's position not as a reversal, but as "prioritiz[ing] border security" after his immigration bill failed in the Senate. But, in fact, McCain has reversed himself on a key component of comprehensive immigration reform.

MSNBC analyst Watkins falsely claimed Clark attacked McCain's patriotism

When Democratic strategist Chris Kofinis said on MSNBC that "to go out there and wax poetically about 'how dare someone question the patriotism of John McCain,' no Democrat has been doing that," political analyst Joe Watkins interrupted, saying, "Wesley Clark did, though," repeating the assertion in a later MSNBC segment. In fact, Clark praised McCain as a "hero to me and to hundreds of thousands of millions of others in the Armed Forces as a prisoner of war."

Andrea Mitchell falsely suggested that MoveOn.org/AFSCME ad attacked McCain's military service

In an interview with Gen. Wesley Clark, Andrea Mitchell stated that "there's a whole issue of whether there is an organized campaign against John McCain's military service, which ... Barack Obama can stand above and say, 'I honor his service.' " Clark responded: "Absolutely not." Mitchell then said: "Take a look at the MoveOn.org ad, the MoveOn.org ad with AFSCME, which has been airing quite widely." But, as Clark stated, the ad "doesn't say anything about [McCain's] military career."

"[L]ive from an oil rig": NBC, MSNBC aired multiple reports on offshore drilling without explaining "environmental concerns" or disclosing GE's drilling connection

NBC's Today and Nightly News and MSNBC Live aired segments in which correspondent Janet Shamlian reported live from an offshore drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico. But while two of Shamlian's reports included quotes from a Chevron spokesperson, none of her reports included an interview with or quote from environmental organizations or explained the "environmental concerns" that Shamlian acknowledged exist. Further, neither Shamlian nor the hosts and anchors disclosed that General Electric, which owns 80 percent of NBC Universal, also has an affiliated business unit that is invested in the acquisition and production of oil and natural gas and another that is a major supplier of equipment and services for the offshore drilling industry.

On MSNBC Live, Contessa Brewer falsely claimed that former President Bill Clinton "reportedly told London's The Telegraph paper that [Sen.] Barack Obama was going to, quote, 'have to kiss my you-know-what,' unquote, if he wanted the former president's help." In fact, the Telegraph article quoted an anonymous "senior Democrat who worked for Mr Clinton," who in turn cited another anonymous source: "One person told me that Bill said Obama would have to quote kiss my ass close quote, if he wants his support."
