In reporting on whether Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama would accept public funding in a general presidential election, The New York Times and Newsweek did not mention that McCain faces possible fines and jail time for breaking spending limits imposed on candidates participating in the public financing system during the primary.

Fox hosts Rove without disclosing reported role with McCain campaign

Republican strategist and Fox News contributor Karl Rove appeared on Fox News' America's Election HQ and Hannity & Colmes to discuss the presidential race, but none of the hosts -- Bill Hemmer, Sean Hannity, or Alan Colmes -- asked Rove whether he was "informally advising" Sen. John McCain's campaign, as a Politico article citing "[a] top McCain adviser" reported, and none noted that Rove has reportedly confirmed donating to McCain's campaign.

Disregarding McCain's reversal on issue, Newsweek's Thomas touted McCain's refusal "to soften his stance[] on immigration"

In a Newsweek cover story, assistant managing editor Evan Thomas wrote of Sen. John McCain: "[W]hen some of his advisers tried to get him to soften his stances on immigration and Iraq, he snapped, 'Don't try to change my mind.' ... It was a characteristically principled stand." In fact, McCain has reversed himself on a key immigration issue.

Referencing an interview former President Bill Clinton gave on PBS' The Charlie Rose Show, Newsweek's Jonathan Alter wrote, "During a December taping with PBS's Charlie Rose, a frustrated Clinton called [Sen. Barack] Obama 'a roll of the dice,' as aides tried to end the interview." However, Alter omitted Rose's on-air comments in which he indicated why Clinton's aides wanted to "end the interview."

Newsweek mischaracterized Bill Clinton to claim he "call[ed] Obama's appeal a 'fairy tale' "

In its "Conventional Wisdom" feature, Newsweek mischaracterized a quote by President Clinton to claim that he "call[ed] [Sen. Barack] Obama's appeal a 'fairy tale' " in comments Clinton made on January 7. In his comments -- which have also been mischaracterized by Newsweek editor Jon Meacham to claim that "Bill Clinton appeared to dismiss Obama's campaign as 'the biggest fairy tale I've ever seen' " -- Clinton was referring, not to Obama or his campaign, but to the senator's statements about his position on the Iraq war.

Media continue to ignore McCain's skipped vote while highlighting his attacks on Clinton

Several media outlets have reported
on the
latest ad released by Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign
attacking Sen. Hillary
Rodham Clinton over her support for an earmark funding a Woodstock Festival
museum, but these outlets have not noted that McCain skipped the vote on
removing the earmark.

Newsweek reported on Clinton documents "still under lock and key," but not that 10,000 will likely become public in 2008

A Newsweek article
reported that "National Archives documents obtained by NEWSWEEK and
interviews with Archives officials indicate that the vast majority of the Clintons' health-care task-force records are still under
lock and key in Little Rock
-- and might stay that way for some time." But the
article did not report that approximately 10,000 pages of Sen.
Hillary Rodham Clinton's documents are already likely to become public in
2008 in addition to thousands
of Clinton
documents that have already been released.

Newsweek ignored evidence that Thompson overlooked GOP wrongdoing in Senate inquiry

An article in the latest issue of Newsweek reported on Fred Thompson's
leadership of a 1997 investigation into campaign finance irregularities,
asserting that "Thompson wound up losing control of the investigation, and the
support of his own party," and that "Thompson has said he wanted to make sure
the inquiry was fair, and not just a Republican hunting party that would be
viewed with suspicion by the public." But
Thompson reportedly shut
down the investigation before Democrats were able to introduce evidence linking
Republican lawmakers to a fundraising group that was found to have skirted
campaign finance laws.

Newsweek, Kurtz uncritically repeated false fuel efficiency accusation against Obama

In a recent column, Newsweek's Keith Naughton stated as
fact that Sen. Barack Obama's "assertion that Japanese cars average
45mpg, when the actual mileage is closer [to] 30mpg" was a "factual
gaffe," echoing the Chicago Tribune's
Jim Mateja. Likewise, The Washington Post's
Howard Kurtz uncritically reprinted part of a Power Line post that highlighted
Mateja's claim. However, a report from the Pew
Center on Global Climate Change stated
that the 2002 average fleet fuel economy value in Japan was 46.3 miles per gallon when
converted to the U.S. Corporate Average Fuel Economy standard.
