Politico's Simon cropped Wright quote, claiming he "made it legitimate" to use Obama's middle name

In writing that Rev. Jeremiah Wright "made it legitimate" to use Sen. Barack Obama's middle name, the Politico's Roger Simon selectively quoted Wright saying at an NAACP dinner, "Please run and tell my stuck-on-stupid friends that Arabic is a language; it's not a religion. Barack Hussein Obama. Barack Hussein Obama. Barack Hussein Obama." Simon omitted the portion of Wright's remarks that immediately followed the part he quoted, in which Wright appeared to criticize those who use Obama's middle name.

Politico's Simon claimed McCain is in "same mold" as Schwarzenegger, ignoring key differences

Writing about Sen. John McCain's chances of winning California in the general election, Politico chief political columnist Roger Simon asserted that McCain "is, broadly speaking, in the same mold as California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger." But Simon did not mention the differences between Schwarzenegger and McCain on two key issues: a timetable for U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq and universal health care.

Media outlets falsely claim Obama contradicted himself regarding Wright statements

Several media figures have falsely claimed that Sen. Barack Obama contradicted previous statements when he said during a March 18 speech on race: "Did I ever hear him [Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's former pastor] make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in the church? Yes." In fact, Obama previously asserted he had not been present for particular statements Wright made that were repeated by various media outlets and that spurred the recent controversy. He did not claim to have never heard Wright make "remarks that could be considered controversial."

On Hardball and in Politico, Roger Simon misrepresented Clinton's comments on Obama's religion

On Hardball, the Politico's Roger Simon falsely suggested that "the last thing [Sen. Hillary Clinton] said" during a recent interview on 60 Minutes when asked whether she believed Sen. Barack Obama is a Muslim was: "No, there is nothing to base that on, as far as I know." In fact, Clinton went on to say, "I have been the target of so many ridiculous rumors. I have a great deal of sympathy for anybody who gets ... smeared with the kind of rumors that go on all the time." In his column, Simon wrote of Clinton's "as far as I know" comment, "Doesn't that just continue a smear?"

Politico's Simon falsely claimed Al Gore "raised the issue" of Willie Horton

Citing the case of Willie Horton, a black man whose image as a criminal who committed crimes while on a weekend furlough from prison was used against 1988 Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis, Politico's Roger Simon wrote that Al Gore "raised the issue in a New York primary debate against Dukakis." In fact, while Gore questioned Dukakis about "weekend passes for convicted criminals," Gore did not mention Horton's name, his crimes, or his race.

Matthews, repeatedly using "cocaine," falsely asserted Clinton strategist "raised drugs"

On The Chris Matthews Show, Matthews falsely asserted that Mark Penn "raised drugs again when I had him on Hardball." In fact, that entire Hardball segment was devoted to the controversy over remarks made by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's then-campaign co-chair about Sen. Barack Obama's past drug use, and Penn was not the first to "raise[]" the issue. On the December 14 edition of Hardball, Matthews accused Clinton's campaign of engaging in "dirty politics"; Matthews and his guests went on to say "cocaine" a total of 10 times during the show.

Media heaped praise on Huckabee's "sexual dig" at Edwards

Media figures and outlets heaped praise on Mike
Huckabee's comment, during the May 15 Republican presidential debate,
that "[w]e've had a Congress that's spent money like John
Edwards at a beauty shop," a reference to reports that former Sen. John
Edwards spent $800 of campaign money (which Edwards said was reimbursed) on two
haircuts. ABC News' The Note, as well as The
Politico's Mike Allen called the line an "instant
classic," while The Politico's
Jonathan Martin predicted that it "will dominate the news coverage in the
days ahead."

The Politico's Simon botched description of Kerry's joke

Roger Simon, chief political columnist for The Politico, wrote
that Sen. John Kerry had "botched a joke about the draft" in October
2006. In asserting that the botched joke was about "the draft," Simon
echoed Republican claims that Kerry was disparaging U.S. troops, rather
than President Bush, as Kerry has said.
