SF Chronicle did not report that McCain's claim, "We have drawn down to pre-surge levels," was false

Reporting that Sen. John McCain "had to defend his [May 29] comments that U.S. troops are down to 'presurge level,' " the San Francisco Chronicle did not point out that McCain's statement was false. As The Washington Post noted, there are about 155,000 troops in Iraq, well above the 130,000 there before the increase. Further, in reporting that McCain "insisted he hadn't misspoken," the Chronicle did not point out that, in addition to his false statement about troop levels in Iraq, he also "misspoke[]" by misstating what he had initially said.

Numerous media outlets publish misleading attacks on decision to limit electronic voting

While reporting on California Secretary of State Debra Bowen's decision to
decertify the state's electronic voting machines in light of a study that found
the systems are vulnerable to security breaches, numerous media outlets attacked
the study's "unrealistic" methodology or uncritically reported criticism of the
study's premise, without noting the researchers' explanation for their methods.

SF Chronicle uncritically reported discredited, anti-gay "research" on same-sex parenting

In a
clarification addressing an article on a new campaign encouraging
same-sex parents to adopt foster children, the San
Francisco Chronicle acknowledged
that Family Research Institute director Paul Cameron, whom it had suggested was
an expert on gay issues in its article, had been expelled from the
American Psychological Association and that the institute has been
"named a hate group."
But the clarification did not
address Cameron's
discredited claim, reported in the article, that gays "are more likely to
molest children of their same sex"; nor did it note that Cameron's
"research" has been widely discredited.

SF Chronicle purported to present "[a]rguments for and against" Proposition 87, but ignored positive health impact

A San Francisco Chronicle voter's guide purported to provide the "[a]rguments
for and against" California ballot
initiative Proposition 87 to impose a tax on California's oil producers. But the guide
failed to mention one of the major arguments of the initiative's
proponents -- positive impact on California's
air quality and health.

Newspaper editorial boards have responded with a variety of opinions to the Mark Foley scandal, from calling for -- or opposing -- House Speaker Dennis Hastert's resignation to noting the "rank hypocrisy" of Republican leaders to referring to the Republicans' attempt to use a "gay scapegoat."
