During discussion of McCain "showing off his foreign policy credentials," Matthews panel ignored McCain's Al Qaeda-Iran gaffes

While discussing whether Sen. John McCain is "smart to make national security the centerpiece of his campaign," Chris Matthews highlighted McCain's recent Middle East trip and said McCain was "showing off his foreign policy credentials." But at no point did Matthews, or any of his guests, point out that, during his trip, McCain made the admittedly false claim that "Al Qaeda is going back into Iran and receiving training and are coming back into Iraq from Iran."

Matthews mischaracterized Bill Clinton "fairy tale" quote

Chris Matthews asserted that former President Bill Clinton "made a series of remarks about Barack Obama that turned off many Democrats and may have helped galvanize black voters for Obama." Matthews then aired an abbreviated clip of Clinton's January 7 comments, "This whole thing is the biggest fairy tale I've ever seen," leaving out his preceding comments in which Clinton made clear that he was talking about Obama's statements regarding the Iraq war and not Obama's campaign.

Brooks' advice to Obama, "Go visit a factory for once"; but Obama spoke at a General Motors plant days earlier

Responding to Chris Matthews' question, "[W]ill Barack Obama's oratorical ability on the lectern in front of big rooms continue to be his winning edge?" The New York Times' David Brooks said: "Yes, but he's got to get away from colleges. Go visit a factory for once." In fact, Obama delivered what his campaign called a "major economic policy address" at a Wisconsin General Motors factory a few days before Brooks made his comment.

Matthews suggested his Clinton comment was an aberration, but he's been making similar remarks for years

On January 17, Chris Matthews addressed the firestorm sparked by his January 9 comment that "the reason" Sen. Hillary Clinton is "a U.S. senator, the reason she's a candidate for president, the reason she may be a front-runner is her husband messed around." Matthews said: "The truth, of course, is finer, smarter, larger than that" and suggested that in the course of "the heated, fast-paced talk we have here on Hardball," he did not "take[] the time to say things right" or "simply said the inappropriate thing." But contrary to his suggestion that his January 9 comments were an aberration, Matthews has repeatedly attributed Clinton's success to her status as "victim" of an adulterous husband.

Matthews: "I personally don't see how" Clinton "loses at all running as the woman candidate"

Chris Matthews -- who previously claimed that "the reason" Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton "may be a front-runner" in the Democratic presidential primaries "is her husband messed around" -- appeared to offer another reason when he said: "I personally don't see how she loses at all running as the woman candidate." He added, "Most Democratic voters are women."

Matthews, repeatedly using "cocaine," falsely asserted Clinton strategist "raised drugs"

On The Chris Matthews Show, Matthews falsely asserted that Mark Penn "raised drugs again when I had him on Hardball." In fact, that entire Hardball segment was devoted to the controversy over remarks made by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's then-campaign co-chair about Sen. Barack Obama's past drug use, and Penn was not the first to "raise[]" the issue. On the December 14 edition of Hardball, Matthews accused Clinton's campaign of engaging in "dirty politics"; Matthews and his guests went on to say "cocaine" a total of 10 times during the show.

Sunday-show discussions of Giuliani billing issue ignored that affair reportedly created increased cost for NYC taxpayers

Chris Matthews, Tim Russert, and Chris Wallace each discussed a Politico article that reported: "As
New York mayor, Rudy
Giuliani billed obscure city agencies for tens of thousands of dollars in
security expenses amassed during the time when he was beginning an extramarital
relationship with future wife Judith Nathan." But, at no point during these
segments did any of the hosts or guests note that Giuliani was having an
extramarital affair with Nathan - whom they described merely as his girlfriend
-- and that, because of the affair, New York City taxpayers were reportedly
paying for both her protection and that of Giuliani's estranged wife.

BBC's Kay: "[A]s a Clinton," Hillary must "come across as somebody who is prepared to use military action"

On The Chris Matthews Show, Katty Kay said that
Sen. Hillary Clinton's "calculation" in her presidential campaign "is that she
can't stand up there as a woman and sound soft." Kay added: "She knows that as a
Clinton and as a
woman, she's got to come across as somebody who is prepared to use military
action if it's needed." Kay did not explain
why being a "Clinton" would necessitate "com[ing] across as
someone who is prepared to use military action."

Matthews revisited Yankees comments to claim Clinton "tried hard to prove she was a Noo Yawker"

The Chris Matthews Show aired
footage of a 1999 interview on NBC's Today
in which Sen. Hillary Clinton said that she has "always been" a fan
of the New York Yankees as evidence that Clinton, according to Matthews, "tried
hard to prove she was a Noo Yawker." Following the clip, Matthews said: "I just
love the way Katie Couric went at her there. 'Come on, how many hats you
wearing, babe?' I just think that was great." But evidence supports the claim
that Clinton
has, in fact, been a longtime Yankees fan.

On Chris Matthews Show, columnist Parker asserted Thompson "ahead of the game" because of high name recognition -- but many haven't heard of him

Columnist Kathleen Parker asserted on The Chris Matthews Show that Fred Thompson
"didn't have to come in early" to the presidential race because "[h]e already
has that name recognition, so he's way ahead of the game. All these other people
have had to spend millions of dollars to get their names known." But recent
polling indicates that roughly a third of the American public have not heard of
Thompson -- a figure higher than that of other leading presidential candidates.
