On the July 20 Radio Factor, Fox News host Bill O'Reilly referred to Chief Justice William Rehnquist as a “vampire,” and, later on, Supreme Court associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as a “zombie.” Elaborating on his Rehnquist comments, O'Reilly said that “he does not believe” Rehnquist “is a human being” and that “I believe that ... you have to drive a stake through the man's heart.” He then warned viewers that if he ever meets Rehnquist, he will be “wearing garlic around my neck and a cross.”
From the July 20 broadcast of Westwood One's The Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly:
CALLER: I got a feeling that [Supreme Court nominee] John Roberts is going to through with no filibuster just like you said, but it's going to be used against the president when the next justice steps down and he appoints another conservative or nominates another conservative.
O'REILLY: Depends. You know, it depends --
CALLER: The left is going to use that against him as, you know, you're stacking the court and that's not right. And all hell's gonna break lose when he has to appoint a second member.
O'REILLY: It just depends on who it is. Because look, the Democrats have to worry about backlash here. They have to worry about being obstructionists, they have to worry about being radical because the American people don't want that. So the next time around, I do believe it will be a woman. I think it's going to be this Edith woman -- what's her last name?
LIS WIEHL (co-host): Edith Clement.
O'REILLY: I think it will be her. Now that's not going to happen 'til Rehnquist is -- Rehnquist, I believe now, is a vampire. I do not believe he is a human being. I believe that, you know, you have to drive a stake through the man's heart to -- he'll be around flying -- you notice you never see him during the day.
WIEHL: That's true.
O'REILLY: You know. And you know, I've never met the man, but I'm wearing garlic around my neck and a cross if I ever do. But you know, Rehnquist won't retire until he's dead and he may die anytime, and I do believe you would probably see a woman next time around, because Bush is shrewd. What he's doing is he's making it very hard for the opposition to stand in his way. And you might see a black woman the next time around, but probably this Edith woman.
And from later in the same show:
CALLER: I'm calling to talk to the lady who is sitting with Bill O'Reilly today.
O'REILLY: Yes, Lis is here listening.
WIEHL: Hi, [caller].
CALLER: Lis. Lis, this is the first time I've been so angry to call in to a talk show. I wish you just wouldn't say any more about appointing a guy. The president had the option to appoint who he wanted on the Supreme Court justice, and he chose this candidate. So, you know, don't say any more, you're making the rest of the women of the world look stupid.
O'REILLY: Oh, man.
WIEHL: You're comfortable with the fact that eight out of nine people that are on the Supreme Court are men?
CALLER: Absolutely.
WIEHL: That doesn't bother you?
CALLER: No, it does not in the least.
O'REILLY: I'd like to throw Ruth Bader Ginsburg out of there and make it unanimous.
WIEHL: Stop it.
O'REILLY: I'd like to kick her right out of there.
WIEHL: You would. You would.
O'REILLY: She's a zombie. That woman's a zombie, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Come on.
CALLER: Bill, you know, you just -- we have won some important rights in my life. And, you know, I'm just thinking, you know, don't play the devil's advocate and make us look stupid.
O'REILLY: All right, we got it, [caller]. And Lis is in tears now. And she thought her sisters would rally to her defense, and they're cutting her to pieces.
