Falling unemployment rate = bad news for Obama

Boy, this president just can't win.
Bob Schieffer and Dan Balz were quite clear: Whatever could have gone wrong for Obama last week, did go wrong. It's part of the Beltway media's beloved Obama-is-dooooomed meme that has been gaining major momentum for the last seven days or so. You know, a private oil rig exploded and it's Obama's fault. Israel attacked an aid flotilla and it's Obama's fault.
My favorite part though, is the fact that during Obama's supposed Week from Hell, unemployment fell to 9.7 percent. It's weird because hasn't every political handicapper been saying that in terms of political optics the White House has to hope the unemployment rate begins to go down. Last month, didn't virtually every mainstream news org stress that while yes, 290,000 new jobs had been added to U.S. payrolls, because the unemployment rate actually went up to 9.9 percent, that meant it was bad news for Obama?
So maybe I'm missing something here, but the fact that the rate just went down, shouldn't that qualify as good news for Obama, at least symbolically? Not for Schieffer and Balz.
Trust me, I understand that the jobs report on Friday was disappointing in that most of the new jobs created came via the U.S. Census. (Save your emails.) But my point is that one month ago, the press held off on claiming 290,000 new jobs was, categorically, good news for Obama because the all-important unemployment rate went up, and that just looked bad. But this month when that same rate falls, pundits announce that everything has gone wrong for Obama?
Behold your liberal media.
