National Review editor Rich Lowry defended FOX News Channel chief political correspondent Carl Cameron -- who wrote a fake news story (since removed but archived here) mocking Senator John Kerry, which was published October 1 on FOXNews.com -- calling Cameron's work “impeccable.” Substituting for conservative syndicated columnist Cal Thomas on the October 9 edition of FOX News Channel's FOX News Watch, Lowry remarked of the Cameron incident: “This is a blip. Carl Cameron's reputation will stand on his work, which is impeccable, and everyone who works with him knows that.”
Here are some examples of Cameron's “impeccable” work documented by Media Matters for America:
- O'Reilly, Cameron forward lie that Bush never said “mission accomplished”
- FOX's Cameron, Wash. Post's Birnbaum echoed GOP, falsely claimed Kerry contradicted himself on Iraq
- FOX's Cameron qualified Bush's comment that “I don't think you can win” the war on terror; overstated Edwards's response
- FOX's “Campaign” Carl Cameron tried to spin Kerry speech, falsely claimed Kerry called Bush a “warmonger”
- FOX's Cameron repeatedly distorted Daschle ad
- FOX's Cameron doctored a Kerry quotation to cast him as flip-flopper
- FOX's “Campaign” Carl misstated the facts about Kerry rallies
- FOX's Cameron downplayed Bush's negative ad blitz; played up Kerry surrogate's attack
