On August 9, The Daily Wire’s Candace Owen falsely claimed in a tweet that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had a plan to put people in camps.
Owens’ claim is a downright lie. Her tweet included a document from the CDC that was crafted during the Trump administration. The document stipulated considerations for preventing the spread of COVID-19 in “humanitarian settings.” As is clearly written in the document, the CDC set out a plan to shield high-risk individuals in certain places, such as refugee camps, from the rest of the population. In no way does this document discuss putting people into camps.
This claim, however, is spreading on far-right fringe media. Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones led his show today claiming, “The entire United States is going to be an open-air reeducation camp.” On Friday, conspiracy theorist Stew Peters ran a segment warning of the CDC concentration camps. And a user of the popular far-right message board TheDonald posted Owens tweet with the message “see ya in the concentration camps.”
Owens has repeatedly spread misinformation regarding COVID-19 on social media. In December, she appeared on The Alex Jones Show and compared the COVID-19 vaccination to slavery. Recently, Owens stated on Twitter that she was “proud” not to be vaccinated, and writing she trusted her “gut” more than public health professionals.
Twitter has a policy against spreading misinformation regarding COVID-19 on its platform. On August 10, the platform suspended Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) for the second time in two months for spreading a misleading claim about the COVID-19 vaccination. As of now, there is not even a warning label on Owens' tweet.
