On the September 18 edition of CNN's Reliable Sources, CBS News contributor and U.S. News & World Report contributing editor Gloria Borger echoed remarks by Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), who, during a September 14 confirmation hearing for Supreme Court chief justice nominee John G. Roberts Jr., stated, “If people can't vote for [Roberts], then I doubt that they can vote for any Republican nominee.”

Borger stated, “I think Orrin Hatch sort of had it right. ... He said if Democrats can't find one reason to vote for this judge, they're never going to find a reason to vote for anyone.”

BORGER: Would we like to know a little bit more about John Roberts? Yes, because we want to know everything about everybody all the time. But, you know, you're just not going to get all that information. The most important things we want to know are questions that, in a way, have to remain unanswered. But I agree with Bob [Zelnick, panelist and former ABC News correspondent]. We did get some sense of how he feels about the importance of precedents when it comes to Supreme Court decisions. We did get some sort of sense of his humility as a justice. And I think Orrin Hatch sort of had it right. You are going to disagree with me. He said if Democrats can't find one reason to vote for this judge, they're never going to find a reason to vote for anyone.
