Newt's Latino News Site “Transitioning”

On April 5, The Americano published an editorial titled “Soberanía frente a capitulación” -- Sovereignty facing capitulation -- attacking the Spanish government for taking up a controversial tax amnesty measure to help the country raise revenue. It is, to date, the last piece of content published by the Latino news website.

The Americano was launched in 2009 by Gingrich Communications, the consulting business that handled Newt Gringich's PR until his now-struggling presidential campaign got rolling in 2011. The Americano's editor-in-chief, Sylvia Garcia, is a long-time Gingrich loyalist; she signed on as Gingrich's point-person for Hispanic outreach in 2004.

Since its launch, The Americano has churned out a steady stream of bilingual news and opinion pieces extolling the virtues of conservatism, and provided innumerable links to Gingrich-centric articles published by other outlets. Ever since April 5, though, there has been no apparent activity on the website, and The Americano Twitter feed has been dead.

Reached via email, Garcia told Media Matters: “We have been transitioning The Americano for the past couple of weeks. We are in the process of updating the content.” She added that the website will resume publishing this afternoon.

The Americano's “transitioning” period comes on the heels of Gingrich's health-care think tank, The Center For Health Transformation, filing for bankruptcy earlier this month.

UPDATE: Shortly after Media Matters published this story, The Americano put up two pieces of content: a link to a Townhall.com column extolling the free market, and an April 12 Heritage Foundation report on how the U.S. should response to North Korea's recent failed missile test.
