MARTHA MACCALLUM (HOST): Richard, you know, we remember Donald Trump when he visited Michigan -- and I believe it was there that he spoke to people and said, “Look, why not give me a try? What you have been trying for the past 25, 30 years and the people you have elected, especially in places like Detroit, has not worked well for you, so why not give me a try?”

RICHARD FOWLER: A couple of responses to that, Martha. Number one, I don't think that Donald Trump has had an authentic conversation with the black community. He's never been in any of these urban areas, so went to visit Wayne County but did not go to Detroit. He went to Broward County but has not been into Sistrunk. He went to Miami-Dade but did not go to Opa-Locka or Kendall. He's not having an authentic conversation with the African-American voter. Now, I will say this, I'll give Donald Trump credit. I think his message over the past couple days has been phenomenal and what we should have heard months ago, but he's not having an authentic conversation on how you really fix the issues happening in African-American communities. And he has a track record that is atrocious when it comes to African-Americans. His company was sued for housing discrimination in the late '70s and early '80s and we could not forget what he did to the Central Park Five, those five gentlemen who -- he was part of mob that basically falsely accused them of murdering a woman in Central Park, which turned out not to be true. Donald Trump cannot be trusted and African-Americans know it.

MACCALLUM: You see them in the cases which were quite a long time ago. I don't know how relevant those specific cases are to, you know, average people who live in this country today and who are experiencing economic distress.
