JOSÉ DÍAZ-BALART (HOST): One thing the GOP is working on is their outreach to minority groups and in our polling, Donald Trump is historically low support from African-American, Latinos, and the LGBT community. Last night, there was quite a moment here on MSNBC when Iowa Republican congressman Steve King suggested only white people have contributed to Western society. ​

REP. STEVE KING (R-IA): Does get a little tired, Charlie. I mean, I'd ask you to go back through history and figure out where are these contributions that have been made by these other categories of people that you're talking about. Where did any other subgroup of people contribute more to civilization? 

CHRIS HAYES (HOST): Than white people? 

KING: Than Western civilization itself. That's rooted in Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and the United States of America. And every place where the footprint of Christianity settled the world. That's all of Western civilization.

SAM STEIN: That was incredible.

DÍAZ-BALART: Ruth, Republicans have for years now said that they're doing outreach, and they are. In different times, the Republican Party had outreach programs to different minority communities. How are they doing so far? 

RUTH MARCUS: Based on that, not so good. I mean, I think the word jaw-dropping was invented for that comment. And I had breakfast -- I was at a breakfast this morning with Reince Priebus the party chairman who famously, after the 2012 campaign, commissioned the autopsy, I believe. I don't know if you can revive an autopsy. But all of the diagnosis there was not followed. And, in fact, it's opposite day in the Republican Party. And they need to do better. 

DÍAZ-BALART: And Sam, I mean, this congressman is not exactly someone who is not being put on a platter here on the convention. 

STEIN: Steve King is on the fringe of his party, so I don't want to paint too broad a brush here about the Republican Party. But that being said, you know, whenever you have someone who is an elected official going out and saying stuff like that, who cheers the Trump campaign for its immigration platform, you have serious outreach problems. And that was truly a remarkable -- pretty much a disgusting comment to make, and really ill-informed and stupid. 

MARCUS: And, you know, it's not just -- he is a fringe. He’s on the fringe of the party. But look at the top of the ticket. We're talking about banning Muslims. We're taking a long time to disavow the David Dukes and KKKs of the world. There is a message that isn't being sent, not necessarily intentionally. You can argue about that. But the people are hearing. 

STEIN: And to the extents that his comments manifest themselves into Trump policy, that's a huge problem, and so I think --
