LAWRENCE JONES (CO-HOST): Guys, I really think that we're getting to see where two ideas that the president campaigned on are going to meet in the center. So he campaigned on tariffs and putting America first, bringing manufacturing back. But he also ran on getting the price down for Americans. And so I think the big question this morning I'm going to pose to the vice president is 'will there be pain, and how long will that pain be?' Because if they can message that where we're only experiencing that for a few months -- now that's going to be hard for the folks that are living paycheck to paycheck -- maybe this is a great idea. But if the plan extends six plus months, then it may be a problem.
STEVE DOOCY (CO-HOST): Right --
JONES: The question is about the pain essentially.
DOOCY: You are absolutely right. And the president and his team have talked about short-term pain. We were talking earlier in the program, Lawrence, before you joined us, about how we've already had one quarter of pain, you know the last quarter which ended on March 30, the first time since 2022 that we have had a down year. And the problem is going forward how long is it going to last? When you saw the array of, of numbers that the president is holding up right there, every country has a different number, and you've got to figure his intention is while they are high right now, he is going to try to be Monty Hall and make a deal with people. The problem in the short-term, and your point about the people who live paycheck to paycheck, is cheap stuff that we have had for decades is going to dry up for the most part. There have been some estimates, if the tariffs as unveiled yesterday go forward and stick, the tariffs will translate into 2.3% increase to overall inflation, and the average American family would feel $3,800 of pain if those go through.
