Today on his Fox News show, Glenn Beck suggested that he had caught President Obama in a contradiction in his Israel policies. Beck said that recent reports that Obama may not support the United Nations declaration that would recognize Palestinian statehood “make no sense” because Obama had previously called for a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine and expressed his hope that Palestine would become part of the United Nations.
Beck further claims that Obama is changing his position as a part of a “political game” with Netanyahu upon hearing he would soon be speaking to Congress about this very issue.
In fact, Obama, like Bush, has endorsed a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine policy. This does not mean, however, that he wants a unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state through the United Nations. Beck is failing to understand the difference regarding the peaceful negotiation between Israel and Palestine leading to a two-state solution, compared to the United Nation unilaterally declaring Palestine a state and potentially escalating the violence between the two countries.
Also what Beck, the new self-appointed defender of Israel, fails to recognize is that Netanyahu himself actually holds the same position as Obama, and Bush. Netanyahu has, in principle, endorsed a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine issue. At the same time, Netanyahu has expressed alarm at Palestinian plans to ask for recognition by the U.N. General Assembly before reaching a final peace agreement with Israel.
So while Beck gave his best effort to exploit Obama, he actually was simultaneously accidentally condemning the prime minister of Israel. Not good for a man who plans a rally in support of Israel's current policies.
