STUART VARNEY (HOST): Crystal Wright is with us. She is the author of the book Con Job. What do you make of this? The Democrats featuring the bereaved mothers of youngsters killed by police but not any relatives of police officers killed in the line of duty. What do you make of this?
CRYSTAL WRIGHT: It's a classic example of what Democrats do best and what I write about in my book, Con Job. They have been creating their political power and winning votes off fomenting racial division for more than half a century. And I think we saw last night with Michelle Obama's speech about how the White House was built by slaves and, oh, yeah, what she left out of her speech, her race-baiting speech, was that the first black president lives in the White House built by slaves, and he is every day for the last seven and a half years has created racial animus between Americans. So it was just, this is what they do best. This is the con they do every four years to win black votes. So I'm not surprised that tonight we'll have part deux of, oh, race in America, it's just so bad, right?VARNEY: OK, hold on a second. Our viewers may not have seen Michelle Obama's speech last night. They may not have seen your reference to the White House being built by slaves. Let me roll that tape so our viewers can understand what we're talking about. Roll it, please.
[BEGIN VIDEO]
MICHELLE OBAMA: The story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation, but who kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves.
[END VIDEO]
VARNEY: I don't know why the Democrats want to do this in such a prevalent fashion throughout their convention because the black vote is pretty solidly behind the Democrats already, isn't it?
WRIGHT: Well, it is. But what was so astonishing is Michelle Obama had an opportunity last night to talk joyfully about being the first black family to occupy the White House, what a joy that was. Instead, she turns that joy into racial animosity over and over again. And the reality is that, while her children are outside playing on the White House lawn -- and don't get me wrong, Stuart, I think it's a wonderful thing that we finally checked the box and elected a black president. But that black president has done nothing in the last seven and a half years to heal racial relations. And I don't think one person can do that. But Barack Obama ran on a promise of hope and change, a promise of bringing the races together. And what she did last night, I think, while she had a well-crafted speech, it was beneath her. She talked about her intelligent, beautiful daughters, right? And this is the legacy you want to leave behind, that it's always about race with you guys? You know? And if anything, he has always taken the side of blacks over whites. He did that in Dallas at the memorial for the five slain police officers, and it's just reprehensible for a president to want to divide the races for political party -- for political power -- than bring them together.
