In an appearance on the May 3 edition of The O'Reilly Factor, Bernie Goldberg criticized use of the word “assassinate” to describe the operation that killed Osama Bin Laden. Goldberg said that the media had only used the term when quoting Hamas:
GOLDBERG: I did notice one thing. And it's not so much a media thing. The media is merely quoting. They have used the word “assassinate” a lot. There was the assassination of Osama Bin Laden.
O'REILLY: Did you see -- can you cite anybody?
GOLDBERG: Again, this is not a media thing. The media is only reporting it. Hamas. Hamas said that we condemn the assassination. So, you know what? Lincoln was assassinated. John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Martin Luther King was assassinated. Drug dealers aren't assassinated. Crips and Bloods aren't assassinated. Tupac Shakur wasn't assassinated. And neither is a sniveling coward who orders people to kill innocent civilians. They're shot. They're shot like rabid dogs are shot. I know this is a small point, Bill, but it's important to me. The word assassinate is too good for somebody like Osama Bin Laden. [Fox News, The O'Reilly Factor, 5/3/11]
Unbeknownst to Goldberg, the term “assassinate” has been used by media to describe the Bin Laden raid. In fact, it has been used on Goldberg and O'Reilly's own sister network, Fox Business. Freedom Watch host Andrew Napolitano began his May 2 show by saying “Usama Bin Laden assassinated, killed on the illegal whim of the president”:
So it is a “media thing.” Specifically, it's a Fox media thing.
