The Fox Primary By the Numbers, October 10 - 16

Fox News has you covered if your campaign has mostly been floundering and doing damage control since its inception. Look no further than Fox & Friends' October 12 interview with Republican presidential candidate and former Fox News contributor Newt Gingrich.

Co-host Steve Doocy praised Gingrich's performance in the October 11 GOP debate: “You did great. You were funny. You were smart.” He then added, “Is it frustrating, though, when so many of the questions seem to be directed at Mitt Romney and Herman Cain, who are at the top of the polls?”

So who's winning the Fox Primary? Each week at Media Matters, we watch the interviews, crunch the numbers, and tell you what Fox is up to in the presidential campaign.

Softball Question(s) of the Week: During an October 12 interview with Michele Bachmann on Hannity, host Sean Hannity again misrepresented the New York magazine poll and asked this:

HANNITY: Let me ask you this. We've been covering a lot of these Occupy Wall Street protests. We'll put up some video here in just a second. But, you know, I'm looking at this, and I say, all right, Barack Obama is supporting them. Nancy Pelosi is supporting them. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz is supporting them. And I'm looking at the people that are there in a recent poll that came out in New York magazine, and they say that the United States is worse than al-Qaeda, that capitalism doesn't work, it's not going to work, and I'm thinking, OK, is this -- the President of the United States supports these people down there? Let's see, you've got people having sex on the sidewalk, walking around topless, doing drugs in the streets. Are we looking at Barack Obama's Democratic Party when we look at these images and we read these signs?

BACHMANN: Well, it looks like it, doesn't it? And I've been reading reports that George Soros has been one of the funders behind this, again, who funded Moveon.org and all of these protests organizations. So, this clearly has nothing at all in common with the Tea Party, which was truly a grassroots movement. I think the President has to do anything but distract from his terrible program and agenda and job-creation record. He's doing disastrously in the polls, but what's worse, he's been a disaster for the viewers that are watching your show tonight because all across America, people's houses are underwater. All across America, they can't find jobs right now. He has no solutions. That's why, again, I want people to look at my economic and job-creation turnaround plan. We can do this. We could turn it around, but we've got to do it pretty quick.

Methodology

Media Matters searched the Nexis database for all guest appearances on Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, and Fox News Sunday for the 10 declared and potential presidential candidates in question: Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Gary Johnson, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Buddy Roemer, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum.

For programs where a transcript was unavailable, Media Matters reviewed the raw video.

Changes to the reports

Media Matters added McCotter to the data beginning on June 20 and Roemer beginning on July 21. We stopped including McCotter on September 22; he dropped out of the race that day.

We stopped including Pawlenty and Trump in the data beginning on August 14; Pawlenty dropped out of the race on that date. And while Trump stated that he would no longer seek the Republican nomination but may instead run as an independent (on June 1, the beginning of this report), we decided to drop him from the data on this date.

We stopped including Bolton in the data beginning on September 6; Bolton decided not to run on this date.

We stopped including Palin in the data after her decision not to run was made on October 5.

Giuliani announced on October 11 that he would not run, so he will not be included in future reports.
