Judges who rule against Trump face an onslaught of attacks against their families from right-wing media

Some in right-wing media resorted to attacking the families of judges overseeing the legal cases brought against President Donald Trump in 2023 and 2024. As the second Trump administration faces a new slate of lawsuits, some in right-wing media are recycling the same strategy, further attacking the families of so-called “activist” judges. Even the conservative Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who was appointed by Trump in 2020, has been targeted by right-wing media.

  • Judges who have ruled against the second Trump administration have faced attacks on their families

  • Supreme Court Associate Justice Amy Coney Barrett

On March 5, 2025, Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined the majority in the Supreme Court to uphold a lower court order requiring the Trump administration to pay U.S. Agency for International Development contractors for work already completed.

    • Laura Loomer posted a photo of Barrett’s family and wrote: “Amy Coney Barrett was a DEI appointee.” Barrett’s family, which includes two Black children who were adopted from Haiti, were featured prominently during her Senate confirmation hearing in 2020. [Twitter/X, 3/5/25; NPR, 9/14/24; NBC News, 10/16/20]
    • Alex Jones suggested that Barrett had been compromised because of “all those weak kids you’d adopted around the world." Jones claimed that “people got some calls over at the old Supreme Court, ‘Hey, we got a little dirt on you, Amy Coney Barrett, all those weak kids you'd adopted around the world.'" [Infowars, The Alex Jones Show, 3/6/25]
    • Right-wing pundit Jesse Lee Peterson, who has a history of misogynistic rhetoric, posted: “A weeping female is a destructive female. … Amy Barrett ‘wept’ with her black kids after George Floyd expired.” [Twitter/X, 3/7/25; Media Matters, 11/4/24]
  • Judge James Boasberg

U.S. District Court Judge James Boasberg issued an order to block deportation flights and demanded the Trump administration cease using wartime powers to deport people. Right-wing media attacked Boasberg’s wife and daughter for their careers.

    • Fox’s Brian Kilmeade said Boasberg was an “activist judge” and called his wife a “radical leftist.” Kilmeade said, “This judge has got a wife who is a radical leftist, Hillary Clinton — huge Hillary Clinton supporter. He seems to be an activist judge and he seems to be really getting ahead of himself on how much weight he actually carries in terms of foreign policy with America." [Fox News, Fox & Friends, 3/18/25]
    • Fox host Jesse Watters attacked the family of Boasberg: “It turns out his family might be compromised. Boasberg's daughter works for migrants. She gives them legal advice and protects them from getting deported. … His wife founded an abortion clinic and hosted Doug Emhoff to speak at her event. Is that a conflict of interest? Someone should look into that.” [Fox News, Jesse Watters Primetime, 3/18/25]
    • Watters again attacked Boasberg’s wife and daughter: “What the hell is this guy thinking? He's conflicted? His wife is an abortionist who hosts Biden Cabinet secretaries at her parties. His daughter works for migrants. She literally works for migrants. She gives them lawyers, legal advice. She fights their deportations.” [Fox News, The Five, 3/19/25]
    • Right-wing commentator Laura Loomer wrote that Boasberg’s daughter “has pronouns in her bio … proving her affiliation with the left” and said her job means Boasberg “must recuse himself." She said his daughter “focuses on criminal defense and advocacy” in her work for an organization that “strongly opposes mass deportations and legislation targeting members of criminal gangs” and thus claimed that “Judge Boasberg has a clear conflict of interest & is obligated to recuse himself from this case." [Twitter/X, 3/17/25]
    • Responding to another related post from Loomer, Rogan O’Handley, who goes by “DC Draino” online, posted that “Loomer just exposed the Federal Judge who tried to stop the flights of MS-13 thugs to El Salvador" and that it “turns out Judge Boasberg’s daughter makes a living giving criminal illegals legal advice.” [Twitter/X, 3/18/25]
    • The Federalist's Mollie Hemingway wrote: “Wow. Did not realize Boasberg’s wife is so extreme that she founded an abortuary.” [Twitter/X, 3/17/25]
  • Right-wing media have a history of attacking the judges who oversaw Trump’s civil and criminal cases

  • Judge Tanya Chutkan

Judge Tanya Chutkan presided over Trump’s election interference case. Right-wing media called for Chutkan to recuse herself. Following the outrage, Chutkan received threatening phone calls and was the victim of a swatting attempt.

    • On Steve Bannon’s War Room, now-FBI director Kash Patel on Chutkan: “She’s so entrenched through her past legal representations and family to the Democratic national party and the Hillary Clinton campaign that she could not be a fair, detached … arbiter of facts.” [Rumble, Real America’s Voice’s War Room, 8/2/23]
    • Fox’s Mark Levin called Chutkan a “chip off the old shoulder" because her “grandfather in Jamaica was actually a Marxist … and was imprisoned by the Jamaican government for a period of time.” [Fox News, America’s Newsroom, 8/29/23]
    • Levin said there is “no damn way” that Judge Chutkan “should be a federal judge,” adding that “her grandfather in Jamaica was a well-known Marxist activist." He continued, “She's a chip off the old block.” [Westwood One, The Mark Levin Show, 8/29/23]
    • A few days later, Levin again questioned Judge Chutkan’s standing as a judge in Trump’s case because her “grandfather was a Marxist in Jamaica." He added, “She’s a bigot.” [Westwood One, The Mark Levin Show, 8/31/23]
  • Judge Juan Merchan

Donald Trump and right-wing media personalities criticized the family members of Judge Juan Merchan, especially Merchan’s daughter Loren, who presided over Trump’s hush money trial. Both Merchan and his family were the target of threats, which resulted in the judge taking measures to protect himself and his family by issuing a gag order that prohibited Trump from speaking about Merchan’s family, jurors, witnesses, and others involved in the case.

    • Newsmax host Greg Kelly argued that Trump is entitled to criticize Merchan’s daughter. He stated, “He is totally entitled to say whatever he wants about the judge, about his daughter, about anything. This is still America, right?” [Newsmax, ;Greg Kelly Reports, 4/1/24]
    • Conservative commentator Julie Kelly posted: “Judge Merchan in expanding gag order to include his Democratic operative daughter: I don't want Trump to use his massive platform to expose the truth about my daughter's lucrative business contracts with Democrats.” [Twitter/X, 4/1/24]
    • Laura Loomer claimed that Democrats are lying that the X account that posted an anti-Trump photo does not belong to Juan Merchan’s daughter Loren anymore. Loomer stated, “It's not a conspiracy theory, and it doesn't matter how many damn times you and your Democrat operatives want to lie. Your lies are not going to stand. It's a lie. Stop lying.” The X account turned out to no longer be Loren’s by that time. [Rumble, Loomer Unleashed, 3/28/24; Media Matters, 4/3/24, 4/5/25; The New York Times, 3/27/24]
    • Newsmax’s Rob Schmitt accused Merchan and his daughter of being biased against Trump. Schmitt stated, “The people presiding over them and the people bringing these cases are clearly political. … And then you have a judge, in this case, whose daughter is, this is a part of her job is politicizing this case, and we're supposed to believe that this guy has no — it's supposed to be fair and balanced?” [Newsmax, Rob Schmitt Tonight, 4/1/24]
    • Conservative journalist Paul Sperry repeated claims that Loren Merchan’s firm used social media “to market its connections to Biden while deriding President Trump" and “has used this case to make money.” The post reads: “BREAKING: MSM won't report content of Trump letter unsealed earlier today demanding Judge Merchan recuse himself b/c his daughter's Dem strategy firm ‘has used social media to market its connections to Biden while deriding President Trump...[and] has used this case to make money.’” [Twitter/X, 4/2/24]
    • Former Fox News contributor Leo Terrell posted: “Attention 75 million Trump's Supporters: Please use social media to get the word out: Judge Merchan and his daughter are TRUMP'S HATERS!” [Twitter/X, 4/2/24]
    • Sean Hannity said on his radio show that there’s a “double standard” between what Trump and Democrats are allowed to say about judges’ relatives. Hannity asked, “Does anybody remember all the threats? I mean, we've had to recently remind people, Chuck Schumer to justices, you know, ‘You pay attention, Kavanaugh, Gorsuch. You won't know what hit you.’ Was that a threat? Sounds like a threat.” Hannity later stated, “Anyway, we'll deal with the double standard.” [Premiere Radio Networks, The Sean Hannity Show, 4/2/24]
    • Fox host Laura Ingraham outright claimed that it “sure looks like an apparent conflict of interest that the daughter has.” She said, “In Trump's hush money trial, another fraud, Judge Juan Merchan expanded a gag order barring him from talking about family members of the court and of D.A. Alvin Bragg. Now, this comes after Trump complained about what sure looks like an apparent conflict of interest that the judge's daughter has. She is the president of something called Authentic Campaigns. It's a Democrat consulting firm.” [Fox News, The Ingraham Angle, 4/2/24]
    • Fox host Jesse Watters also supported the conflict of interest theory and claimed that “the judge’s family is getting rich off Trump trials” because Merchan’s daughter “is a Democrat consultant whose clients — the Biden campaign, Adam Schiff — are fundraising off Trump’s indictment.” He argued, “If Trump’s convicted, his family financially benefits. And instead of recusing because of the glaring conflict of interest, the judge is gagging Trump for pointing out the conflict of interest.” [Fox News, Jesse Watters Primetime, 4/2/24]
    • War Room co-host Natalie Winters accused Judge Merchan of conspiring with progressive donor George Soros and the Brennan Center to wage “lawfare” against Trump, citing Merchan’s daughter’s company ties with Democrats and progressive organizations. • Fox News contributor Kellyanne Conway: “I know much has been made of Judge Merchan's political contributions to Joe Biden directly, to anti-Trump groups, specifically to his daughter's making millions off of being a Democratic operative and cashing in against Donald Trump.” [Fox News, One Nation with Brian Kilmeade, 6/1/24]
  • Judge Arthor Engoron

Engoron presided over Donald Trump’s civil fraud trial in New York. Right-wing podcaster Laura Loomer singled out Engoron’s wife, claiming that his wife attacked Trump on social media. A court spokesperson said these allegations were false.

    • Laura Loomer posted: “I have Uncovered screenshots from the X account of Dawn Marie Engoron, the wife of Leftist NYC Judge Arthur Engoron, who is overseeing the civil fraud against President Trump shows that she has been posting attacks on Trump from her account @dm_sminxs as the trial is ongoing.” She added, “Nobody can actually say this is a fair trial!" [Twitter/X, 11/8/23]
    • Loomer: “You just have to laugh at the fact that this psychotic judge is literally married to a psychotherapist, okay, the woman who wants to post F-Trump memes and photoshop Donald Trump in a jumpsuit, in an orange jumpsuit and say that he’s going to jail, is literally a licensed mental health professional." [Rumble, Loomer Unleashed, 11/10/23]
    • Loome posted: “President Trump just shared 7 of my reports in a row on Truth Social! The posts he just posted and shared are my EXCLUSIVE reports about how Leftist, NYC Judge Engoron’s wife Dawn Engoron has been making anti-Trump posts while Trump’s civil fraud trial is taking place!" [Twitter/X, 11/28/23]
    • Loomer defended Trump for publicly criticizing judges’ families: “President Trump wouldn't need to attack the members of these — the family members of these judges if they actually were ethical and they stopped posting about Trump going to jail like Dawn Marie Engoron did, you know, the wife of Judge Engoron." [Rumble, Loomer Unleased, 3/28/24]
