In a discussion about President-elect Donald Trump’s plan for mass deportation of migrants, Fox News anchors Bret Baier and Bill Hemmer repeatedly downplayed the impact of the policy by claiming Trump is “going after the criminals” and “suspected terrorists” first, with noncriminals addressed later as part of a “tiered approach.”
Hemmer said: “It may be some time, if at all, before they deport families, etc.”
Baier agreed, saying that he doesn’t think the administration will go “from zero to 60 on day one” and that “they're not going to be kicking down doors on abuelito.”
“You know, on all those Sunday shows where they said the grandmother's going to be, you know, out in handcuffs. I don't think that's happening, you know, right away,” he continued.
Trump’s mass deportation plans could impact more than 22 million people who live in the country's 5.8 million mixed-status families, where one or more family members are undocumented. Another part of Trump’s deportation agenda, which the anchors ignored, will likely include ending an asylum parole program for people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela which allowed “qualified nationals” to apply for temporary stay in the U.S. if they were sponsored by someone who had U.S. citizenship or legal status.
Over the past few days, Fox News personalities have continued to push the idea that criminals are the primary focus of Trump’s deportation plan even though Trump has said he will target millions of migrants, including potentially those who are here with authorization or who simply live with an undocumented person.
