Archie Comics Adds First Gay Character

In what may be the latest groundbreaking move among comic book fans, Archie Comics is adding its first openly gay character, according to Comicsbeat.com.

It reports that the September issue of Veronica adds one Kevin Keller to the gang at the Choklit Shop and appears to introduce a storyline in which Veronica is gaga for him. Another key element is that Kevin is gladly open about his sexuality, indicating writers are pushing the situation as an example where gays and lesbians need not hide their true selves, even in high school.

Comicsbeat.com quotes Archie Co-CEO Jon Goldwater as saying: “The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive. Archie's hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books.”
