On October 4, responding to a caller who asked about “deal[ing] with” the Democratic loyalties of his Brooklyn-raised Jewish relatives, Newsradio 850 KOA host Mike Rosen stated that "[y]ou are dealing with a lot of people who cannot be reached with a rational argument," before adding that “so many Jews are instinctive socialists.” By way of further explanation, Rosen stated, “You're dealing with people who are very emotional.” Explaining his perspective, Rosen noted that he is “from Brooklyn” and “of Jewish heritage.”
As Colorado Media Matters has noted, Rosen asserted on his September 27 broadcast that “so many Jews who are regarded by people as instinctively good merchants are just that. They're merchants at the retail level and don't have, I don't think, a good grasp of the big economic picture.” On his October 3 broadcast, Rosen accused Colorado Media Matters of substituting an ellipsis for some of his words in the September 28 item to “cast” him “as anti-Semitic.” Rosen also claimed that with the ellipsis, Colorado Media Matters “left out the very relevant fact that I talked about how other people regard Jews.”
The words that Colorado Media Matters replaced with an ellipsis -- “I don't think” -- reflected that Rosen himself -- not “other people” -- “do[esn't] think” that the Jews he referred to “grasp” the “big economic picture.”
Additionally, Colorado Media Matters pointed out that during his August 1, 2006, program, Rosen said, “Jews, even though a small fraction of most national populations, tend to be more successful financially, they tend to be better educated. From a personality standpoint, it's probably fair to say that Jews have a tendency toward pushiness and ostentatiousness.” He further stated, “I grew up in New York City, where there are an inordinate number of Jews,” and added, "[P]olitically, I have differences with most Jews. I'm a conservative Republican, and most Jews tend to be liberal Democrats." He also stated on the same broadcast that “there's a certain abrasiveness to the stereotypical Jewish personality.”
From the October 4 broadcast of Newsradio 850 KOA's The Mike Rosen Show:
CALLER: I'm a full-blooded Jew.
ROSEN: Yes.
CALLER: And my, both my parents are, you know, and all my relatives are Democrat. Whatever the Democrats do is right, and the Republicans is wrong. No matter what.
ROSEN: Yes. Mmm-hmm.
CALLER: How do you suggest I deal with that?
ROSEN: Don't -- it's hopeless.
CALLER: OK.
ROSEN: Hopeless. I'm saying. Where are they from, your relatives?
CALLER: Brooklyn.
ROSEN: [laughs] OK. I'm not being dismissive.
CALLER: I wasn't raised there, but they were from -- they were raised there.
ROSEN: That's my background as well. You know I'm --
CALLER: Yeah, I know that --
ROSEN: -- from Brooklyn.
CALLER: Yeah, I know that very well.
ROSEN: And I'm of Jewish heritage --
CALLER: Right.
ROSEN: -- although I don't practice the religion.
CALLER: Yeah, either do I.
ROSEN: And on a show last week some caller wanted to know why Jews are overwhelmingly liberal Democrats and --
CALLER: Yeah, right.
ROSEN: -- there's no doubt that that's true. You've got exit polling data --
CALLER: Right.
ROSEN: -- to back it up. And I grew up in that kind of an environment.
CALLER: Right.
ROSEN: You are dealing with a lot of people who cannot be reached with a rational argument.
CALLER: Yeah, right.
ROSEN: You're trying to overcome an ideology, and so many Jews are instinctive socialists.
CALLER: It's the utopia socialist ideology --
ROSEN: You're dealing with --
CALLER: -- that you keep talking about.
ROSEN: You're dealing with people who are very emotional.
CALLER: Right.
ROSEN: You can't reach them with a rational argument.
