NABJ Survey: Local Television Management Diversity Lags Behind

A new survey from the National Association of Black Journalists finds that management at local television stations lacks diversity compared to the population as a whole.

The Radio Television Digital News Association reported the findings:

... the third annual report on the diversity of the management teams that run 151 of those stations finds most still have a long way to go to reflect the communities they serve. People of color comprise approximately one-third of the United States population but only 12.6 percent of all managers in these newsrooms. 82 of the stations have no diversity at all on their news management teams.

816 executive producers, assignment managers, managing editors, assistant news directors, news directors and general managers work at these stations. 714 (87.9 percent) are White, 64 (7.8 percent) are African American, 24 (3 percent) are Hispanic/Latino, 13 (1.6 percent) are Asian and only 1 is Native American.
