On the April 16 broadcast of his 630 KHOW-AM show, host Peter Boyles allowed former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb to address the city's purported “sanctuary” policy. As Colorado Media Matters noted, Boyles has repeatedly and falsely claimed that as mayor, Webb “proclaimed” Denver a so-called “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants by issuing Executive Order 116, which dealt with immigration policy. Responding to Boyles' question, "[W]hat do you think one-sixteen was about?" Webb said, “I don't think you can find anywhere in the executive order that it says 'sanctuary city.' ” When Webb asked Boyles, "[D]id you find 'sanctuary city' in there?" Boyles replied, “No, sir, I did not.” Webb stated that his administration at the time wanted to send a clear message that “we're not going to be harassing Mexicans just because they're Mexican.”

BOYLES: So let me come back to Executive Order one-sixteen. March 1998. You in front of Rosa Linda's restaurant. What do you --

WEBB: I was, I was in Rosa Linda's restaurant.

BOYLES: Well, but they, they say -- they wrote about you in The Denver Post, “Mayor Wellington Webb walked resolutely outside.” But go ahead. I don't know. It didn't matter.

WEBB: I, I, I always walk resolutely.

BOYLES: Yes, you do. Now, all right --

WEBB: Go ahead.

BOYLES: So, what -- what do you think one-sixteen was about?

WEBB: One-sixteen basically -- and, and, and I don't think you can find anywhere in the executive order that it says “sanctuary city” as you --

BOYLES: A rose by any other name, your honor.

WEBB: Well, did you find “sanctuary city” in there?

BOYLES: No, sir, I did not.

WEBB: OK, because it's not there.

BOYLES: No, sir, it isn't.

WEBB: But what was said, and I believe that then as I believe today, is that periodically we have to send very clear messages that -- and the message that I was sending was very clear. The same way that in 1993 I said we're not going to be picking up black kids on the, on the thought that they were in gangs because their pants were sagging and they happened to be black. When I did the Rosa Linda's I said we're not going to be harassing Mexicans just because they're Mexican. If you have probable cause, you have a reason to stop them and to detain them and arrest them, if you think they've done something wrong. But just because they're Mexican in Denver, so long as I'm mayor, we're not going to be harassing Mexicans just, just because that they're Mexican.

As Colorado Media Matters noted, Boyles -- despite his previous attacks -- failed to ask Webb about his purported sanctuary policies during the March 28 broadcast of KBDI Channel 12's public affairs program Colorado Inside Out Live. As he explained on the March 29 broadcast of his radio show, "[W]e'll discuss the ... sanctuary stuff at another time. But that wasn't the time last night."
