Cable news networks largely ignored changes the incoming Trump administration and congressional Republicans are reportedly considering to limit access to Medicaid. The proposal has raised alarms among health care advocates, who warn of potentially devastating impacts to vulnerable populations including children, seniors, and people with disabilities.

Since November 14, CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC have given Republicans’ potential plans only 40 combined minutes of coverage. MSNBC led networks with over 33 minutes of coverage. Both CNN and Fox News largely failed to cover the story, however, with CNN devoting just 6 minutes to the potential Medicaid cuts and Fox devoting less than a minute of coverage.

Donald Trump and congressional Republicans pursued similar efforts to limit Medicaid during Trump’s first term. Given the huge public support for Medicaid, news networks should devote more coverage to these potentially devastating cuts.

As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to begin his second term in office, Fox News is downplaying his agenda that threatens to deport millions of people, implement destructive economic policy, roll back reproductive rights, enact “retribution” against his rivals, promote anti-vaccine figures to be in charge of public health, and radically gut federal entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare.

Now, as many Project 2025 architects are joining Trump's administration, Fox News has been working since the election to make his agenda appear more moderate.

None of this is surprising. During the first Trump administration, Fox served as Trump’s loyal propaganda outlet. Since his election victory, the network has also been serving as a quasi staffing agency for the incoming administration.

  • In case you missed it

    • Kari Lake, Donald Trump’s pick to lead Voice of America, is an unhinged conspiracy theorist who lashes out at the press, hobnobs with far-right and antisemitic extremist outlets, and has criticized Fox News as “a globalist network.”
    • Steve Bannon praised Lake's pick, saying, “Edward R. Murrow, you're stepping into his shoes.”
    • Fox News is playing along with Trump, claiming he’ll work on a plan for Dreamers despite trying to dismantle DACA in his first term.
    • Conservative economic commentators are criticizing the Federal Reserve ahead of expected interest rate cuts later this month, using a slight uptick in one inflation measurement to renew their campaign to bully Fed policy makers.
    • The Daily Wire is taking credit for stirring up the Capitol Hill bathroom controversy.
    • On MSNBC, Media Matters President Angelo Carusone discussed the Murdoch family’s legal disputes and what they intend to do with Fox News.
