Even though President Donald Trump’s administration has taken multiple actions that have effectively weakened the economy, Fox News is helping Trump prepare to place the blame for worsening economic indicators on former President Joe Biden, who handed off a strong and stable economy to Trump less than two months ago.

Reports confirm that Trump is planning to blame Biden for the economic turmoil under his administration. Time, for instance, reported that a White House official said to “expect more” of Trump blaming Biden, noting that “He’s going to speak directly to the American people about the challenges he inherited from the previous administration.” As loyal propagandists for the Trump administration, Fox figures are now moving to support their Dear Leader’s gambit.

    • Fox contributor Newt Gingrich: “Just as Reagan inherited Carter’s bad economy, President Trump inherited Biden’s bad economy.”
    • Fox Business host Larry Kudlow: “Right now the economy is doing poorly. This is still the Biden economy.”
    • Fox guest Stephen Moore: “These numbers that have come in so far are really the Biden numbers. … This is a bit of the Biden hangover.”
  • The right’s decade-long lurch toward Vladimir Putin’s Russia

Donald Trump’s actions over the past few weeks have drawn cheers from Russian President Vladimir Putin’s government — and with good reason. He has repeatedly made statements and taken actions that highlight his Putinist turn. Some remnants of the right-wing media that are still somewhat in step with the values of Ronald Reagan have objected, but its far more popular and influential members are lining up behind the president and praising his actions.

The right-wing comentariat’s decade-long shift from near-universal antagonism to Russia to eager amplification of Kremlin propaganda has helped create the environment for Trump’s recent moves selling out Ukraine in favor of an effective alliance with Putin.

Media Matter’s Matt Gertz wrote this extremely in-depth piece going through the right’s Putinist turn. I invite you to read the piece here.

  • In case you missed it

    • Right-wing media are laying the foundation for Republican cuts to Medicaid. In fact, Fox figures have been claiming that Republicans weren’t going to cut Medicaid. But a new report by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says otherwise.
    • Fox is making up excuses for Trump’s failure to lower grocery prices, as he promised to do.
    • As FEMA cuts lurk, state and local news outlets are speaking with experts about potential consequences.
    • Fox is parroting Trump’s “drug war” justification for his tariffs on Mexico and Canada, even as he weakened fentanyl smuggling enforcement.
    • A Republican caller to Mark Levin’s radio show worried about the effects of revoking parole for Ukrainians fleeing war, sharing concern for his Ukrainian fiancée and her family. Now, the Trump administration is reportedly planning on rolling back those protections.
    • Media Matters President Angelo Carusone described how talk radio callers are showing the impact of mass government layoffs.
    • Right-wing media figures mocked Worcester, Massachusetts, for voting to become a sanctuary city for transgender people. They also denied that there have been attacks on transgender rights — even as they defended those very attacks.
