WILL CAIN (HOST): COVID insanity might have just claimed our first national champion. I didn't get much sleep last night, as I've hinted at, because I stayed up late watching Texas lose to Mississippi State that Saturday night on a walk-off single that made the finals Mississippi State versus Vanderbilt in the College World Series. But Vanderbilt didn't get there quite as cleanly as Mississippi State. Vanderbilt was playing North Carolina State. North Carolina State was a Cinderella story, not ranked that highly compared to its competitors, but playing awesomely. And it had reached the Final Four, along with Texas, Mississippi State, and Vanderbilt. But in its matchup with Vanderbilt, before its final game, two North Carolina state players unvaccinated tested positive for COVID-19. As a result, the NCAA tested the entire squad, tested everyone of the players and the staff for the Wolfpack. In that testing, four more individuals, quote-unquote, in the dugout came back with a positive test. Now, these individuals were reportedly, according to D1baseball.com, vaccinated individuals. And this has broken the sports world like everything else in society, into two camps.

For many, like the patron saint of insanity, Dan Wolken of USA Today, it's an example of irresponsibility and the cost of someone choosing not to get vaccinated. Others in the sports world, like Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, put it on these players as highly irresponsible human beings who compromised their season, not just theirs, but all of their teammates in the program of North Carolina State. How dare they choose to not get vaccinated and put their hopes and dreams at risk?

For others like myself, this illustrates the insanity of our COVID protocols. In that game, a game full of 18-to-22-year-olds, the healthiest members of our society whose risk statistically of any type of serious injury spread or hospitalization, much less death from COVID-19 is fractional, minuscule.

In that game, there was a stadium full of spectators, over 20000 who were not tested for COVID -- they vaccinated? I don't know. They positive or negative for COVID-19? Who knows. But it's the players on the field, baseball, by the way, a socially distant sport, which is essentially an individual sport dressed up as a team sport, but it's those players on the field that are the real risk. Man, such stupid insanity. And it may have -- it may have -- I think, not the irresponsibility of two unvaccinated players, but the insanity of an NCAA protocol cost North Carolina State a national championship. The NCAA called their next game, canceled it against Vanderbilt, said NC State is out -- out because of this, out of the tournament, out of the College World Series. Vanderbilt advances because of six positive tests. Just insane and unjust.

I'm sure there are someone like it was their responsibility, it's the risk-reward. Them's the rules. The rules are stupid. The quote-unquote science is stupid. Look at the stats. If you dare bring up Delta variant, I swear I'm going to lose my mind. Look at the stats.

We're hanging on to this out of fear porn. We're hanging out and this out of identity. Dan Wolken at USA Today needs this. It turns him on, man. Any time he can point to someone who is on the wrong side of his fascist science, he starts feeling things. And it's not just him. I'm using him as an example because it's so many of us and it makes you wonder what's next -- what's next. We've already had our mask fights. Everyone's little inner tyrant got to come out as we forced each other to put on masks. Put on your mask at the grocery store -- science denier. Now we translate that into get your vaccine, anti-vaxxer. And we love it. Love it. Such bloodlust. And I wonder at some point the vaccine issue will go away, just like the mask issue.

Maybe we've gotten addicted to this tyranny. Maybe we've got addicted to bossing each other around. What's next? What comes after this? You can't give us a year of getting to be little mini Pol Pots and just expect us to go back to being average citizens. What are we going to do? How are we gonna walk the dog without passing judgment on other people?

Going to have to find something new. I wonder what it will be.

...

In the meantime, in our blood lust for power and our insanity for COVID, we just cost a bunch of young men their chance to play for a national title. So proud.
