An interesting revelation in the obituary of longtime newsman Daniel Schorr, who died Friday. The New York Times obit on him noted he claims he missed out on a job with the paper in his early years because they were afraid it would have too many Jewish staffers if he were hired.
“Mr. Schorr still preferred The Times, but when he didn't hear further, he inquired and learned that the offer had been withdrawn,” the obit stated, noting a story he told about one of his efforts to join the paper. “As Mr. Schorr told the story, an editor later sheepishly explained that the paper was concerned that too many Jewish bylines might jeopardize its coverage of the Mideast.”
