Within hours of Helen Thomas announcing her retirement in the wake of her offensive comments about Israel, the guessing game has begun over who gets her coveted front-row seat at White House briefings.
The White House Correspondents Association, which oversees such details, had planned a meeting for Thursday to discuss Thomas' remarks, but appears now ready to use that meeting to decide who will get her old seat.
Thomas resigned after a video of her saying Israel should “get the hell out of Palestine” circulated on the Internet.
Since then, speculation has increased about who will take her old chair. Several news outlets contend it will go to Fox News or Bloomberg.
"Politico says Thomas' coveted seat, which is front and center in the James S. Brady briefing room, will go to Fox News or Bloomberg News," writes Poynter's Mallary Jean Tenore. "About 50 percent of people who took Mediaite's related poll guessed Fox News' Major Garrett would get it."
But she adds that David Jackson, incoming president of the White House Correspondents' Association says it's too early to tell.
“No decisions have been made on the open seat,” Jackson said in an e-mail to Poynter. “We have elections for three seats that are open [an at-large organization, magazine and TV seat]. I will recommend that the new board decide the issue, but I don't know what my colleagues will want to do." The new board will take over on July 16.
