Glenn Beck lashed out at The New York Times for highlighting recent Beck-inspired death threats made against Francis Fox Piven, rather than reporting on “strikes and riots” in Greece. This is just the latest example of Beck's ceaseless fearmongering that violent rioting in Greece will be replicated in the U.S.
Beck Obsession: The “Riots In Greece” Are Coming “Ashore”

Beck Criticizes NYT For Covering Beck-Inspired Death Threats Against Piven Rather Than Riots In Greece
Beck: “Where Was Your Concern When Piven Called For Strikes And Riots Based On The Model And The [Violent] Ones Seen Recently In Greece?” From Beck's Fox News show:
The Times explained on Saturday to their readers, who are diminishing day-by-day, that Piven's life is now in danger because I read her words on my program. Well, how thoughtful of you, New York Times, but where was your concern when Piven called for strikes and riots, based on the model and the ones seen recently in Greece, which she deemed effective? These riots. The riots she lusts for are more than just fun and games.
One 32-year old banking clerk who was 4 months pregnant had just phoned her mom because her mom was nervous when she saw the riots in the area she was working in. The daughter said “Mom, don't worry, I'll call you right back. Don't worry.” Mom never received the phone call back, because her daughter died, along with two other colleagues. I know Europe doesn't count the unborn baby, but the baby was murdered as well.
After fire bombs were tossed through broken windows, by communists, socialists and anarchists, asphyxiating all of them in clouds of toxic smoke. Their office was targeted as a symbol of capitalist greed. And, The New York Times is concerned about Piven's safety? Why? I mean, they must have some credible, firm, solid proof to pin a story in a paper of record or else they'd be doing story on the fears of bankers getting fire bombed at their offices. Piven Refuted Beck's Claim That She Advocated Violence. The New York Times reported:
Ms. Piven came under additional scrutiny when she wrote in the liberal magazine The Nation this month that unemployed people should be staging mass protests.
Her assertions that “an effective movement of the unemployed will have to look something like the strikes and riots that have spread across Greece,” and that “protesters need targets, preferably local and accessible ones,” led Mr. Beck to ask on Fox this week, “Is that not inciting violence? Is that not asking for violence?” Videos of fires in Greece played behind him.
“That is not a call for violence,” Ms. Piven said Friday of the references to riots. “There is a kind of rhetorical trick that is always used to denounce movements of ordinary people, and that is to imply that the massing of people itself is violent.”
That, she said, is what Mr. Beck is doing, trying to frighten his viewers. [The New York Times, 1/21/11]
Beck Has Frequently Fearmongered That Riots In Greece Are Coming To The U.S.
Beck: We Could Have “What's Happening In Greece,” And “Everyone Is” In Danger. From Beck's Fox News show:
If things go awry, and I warn you that things could, it's like a run on the bank. The truth won't patter anymore. Once it actually starts, look what's happening in Greece. One side will kill somebody. And then the other side will have to respond and kill somebody else. And before you know it, we're the Palestinians and the Israelis -- people are killing each other they don't even know quite why anymore.
All of those in the media and in Washington, all those with fame, all those with fortune, bankers -- anybody with power, you're going to be in danger. If God forbid the worst begins, all bets are off, our world changes. I am in danger. You're in danger. Everyone is.
Who would want this? Crazy people and anarchists.
The question is: how many in the media and Washington actually believe the worst can happen? You see, by telling you that the worst can happen, I'm called crazy. But then they tell you that I'm trying to get the worst to happen. But I thought they didn't believe in it. [Fox News, Glenn Beck, 1/10/11, via Nexis]
Beck: “I Told You Unrest Was Coming To Europe And Then It's Coming Here.” From Beck's Fox News show:
Showing you for a year in advance -- a year in advance, I told you unrest was coming to Europe and then it's coming here. I have shown you now in the last few a months the actual unrest and violence in the street of Europe.
Again, today in Greece, the unions shut down public transportation. Who did I tell you would go that? The unions. Students are taking to the street in England over possible tuition hikes. I told you that would happen a year ago.
We showed you the burning cars. We've showed you how they are mirroring the failed economic policies here in America. I'm a paranoid lunatic, seditious. This must be suffocating paranoia.
Now, let me ask you this -- are they willing now to say the same thing about the Pentagon? Because they have been war-gaming an economic crisis for almost two years now. One of these war games was called Unified Quest 2011. [Fox News, Glenn Beck, 12/8/10, via Nexis]
Beck: “What Is Coming Now” Includes Violent Struggle And Is “Not Limited To Europe.” From Beck's Fox News show:
Let me introduce you to a group who would love to influence your college kids. Revolution. So who is Revolution?
Well, Revolution is an international socialist youth organization. “We are a group of young activists who are fed up with unemployment, war, poverty, cuts, and Capitalism.” This group published an article called “What is Violence?” Here is a paragraph from the article that might give you a sense of who this group really is. “What is Violence?” The history of the British democracy is one long struggle of the oppressed against their oppressor. Does that sound familiar? They go on starting with the supremacy of the Parliament over the unelected monarch that was won with a bloody and violent civil war and removal of Charles I's head.
This was followed by the struggle for the right to vote to be extended to people other than the land-owning rich, which saw mass riots across the country, escalating to a general strike and near revolution. Which finally forced the ruling class to back down.
Later on, the Suffragette movement utilized violent tactics such as occupations, the storming of parliament and, yes, the breaking of windows to win the right to vote."
The next sentence, however, is: “However, this isn't just a matter of history. The struggle continues to this day.”
I have been saying now -- gosh, almost for five years -- I've been warning that they were sowing the seeds of this and I've been saying for at least two years that this is what is coming now. It's not limited to Europe. Radicals are infesting our education system, our union hierarchy, and even our government is riddled with them. What is it going to take for your friends and neighbors to finally see all of them -- see the truth for what it is. [Fox News, Glenn Beck, 12/8/10, via Nexis]
Beck On France And Greece: “Wait Until It Washes Ashore In America.” From Beck's Fox News show:
What do you think we're seeing in France and in Greece? What is this? Do you remember on this program? How long ago did I say this was happening, two years ago, year-and-a-half?
I told you this was going to happen. “New York Times” ridiculed me. Wait until it washes ashore in America. They're riding in the streets in France over a two-year increase in retirement age, from 60 to 62. They're calling it a birthright. But the retirement age was lowered from 65 to 60 in 1982.
We have 40 million people now on food stamps in America, 40 million. We have people protesting in the street because 99 weeks just isn't enough.
Now, let me ask you something. How do you think it's going to over to when we finally realize what England is doing, what they just realized is right. That we have to start to drastically cut government program and handouts.
Remember: what the goal here is fundamental transformation of America. Soros -- Soros isn't getting in the way of the GOP avalanche, because it's convenient to blame the coming economic avalanche on the GOP. Any breakdown, any chaos, like in France, it will work to their advantage.
I want to show you a quote, this is -- we found it a couple of places -- but this is in the Stanley Kurtz's book “Radical-in-Chief.” He is summarizing the view of 1960s radical Peter Dreier, who wrote an influential essay on socialist policy in 1979.
This is what he said, 1979: “Gradually expand government spending until the country nears fiscal collapse. At that point, a public accustom to its entitlements will presumably turn on the capitalist masters when they propose cutbacks to restore fiscal balance.” Sound familiar? Cloward and Piven.
That's why I told you that it was important to have the left wing movement in place. They had to have it in place to, quote, “trigger and turn the national fiscal crisis into a socialist direction.”
Put yourself in this situation because, see, this is where it will become real for you. You lose your job. You don't have health care.
Your kids are hungry. The economy is spiraling out of control. Your dollar is losing value.
And people are starting to riot in the streets. And this is happening in the streets of your town.
And someone steps up to a microphone and says, “I can bring order to the place.” How many people in the neighborhood will say, wait, wait, wait, is that constitutional? No. Very few will. They'll just want order. Make it stop! [Fox News, Glenn Beck, 10/21/10, via Nexis]
Beck Warns That High Unemployment Will Lead To “The Riots In Greece.” From Beck's Fox News show:
I want to show a chart showing the duration of unemployment in the U.S. And this is not the fearmongering Glenn Beck saying this. These are figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Now, we've already had a glimpse of what happens when you've got unemployment and you have people saying, no -- no, you can't have pensions that you were promised because you were played by these guys. What happens? Well, you have the riots in Greece. [Fox News, Glenn Beck, 9/15/10, via Nexis]
Beck: “Our Government Is Backing Us Into A Wall” That Will Lead To “Rioting In The Street” Like In Greece. From Beck's Fox News show:
Look, here is the thing. You know and I know it can't happen. There is no way. We can't all of a sudden become millionaires, unless we start to sell air. You know, they're already doing that one.
Our government is backing us into a wall, into a hole. This is what they mean when they say it's unsustainable. It's what Greece is figuring out right now. Do you know three people died today in Greece because of the rioting? They're burning - they're burning buildings. They are rioting in the street. Three people died. [Fox News, Glenn Beck, 5/05/10, via Nexis]
Beck On What “America May Experience”: “Show Me Greece, Please.” From Beck's Fox News show:
“Fiscal adjustments of a magnitude that in some cases will test social cohesion.” Let me translate “social cohesion.” Show me Greece, please.
This is the test of social cohesion. They're called riots. They believe society may experience -- America may experience some sort of breakdown.
And I'm telling you, I am begging you, America, please, root yourself in things that are real because I think it's a possibility, too -- because fiscal adjustments must be made. I ask you. You know, I kind of look -- I kind of look at all of us as people who are on the deck of the Titanic.
And it's our job to be people -- they are going to argue inside the boat like crazy. You stand on the deck and you help me find stuff that floats. You help me build lifeboats and you get people -- because they're going to come out! They're going to come out of the ship and they're going to say, OK.
And they're still going to be arguing, it's your fault, no, it's his fault, it's that captain, it's that crew member. Don't -- it doesn't matter. Get people into boats. [Fox News, Glenn Beck, 3/18/10, via Nexis]
Beck: “Unions” Are “Orchestrating The Riots In Greece,” And “We're Looking At This Model.” From Beck's Fox News show:
Greece? Yes, Greece, broke. England? On the brink of economic disaster. Total mess.
We're looking at this model. By the way, the blue is -- oh, my gosh - - collapse. The red? Yes, pretty soon collapse.
Who looks at this and says, “Yes, I got to get some of this, huh”?
We're marching down the road to European socialized health care. We're looking for bigger government. We're looking to get in bed with our unions.
What -- who's orchestrating the riots in Greece? Who are the ones protesting? Unions! Why are they protesting? Because of union pensions can't be paid. Sound familiar?
Despite the reams and reams of evidence to show spending in big government isn't working, for some reason, our government is saying, we got to be like these guys. [Fox News, Glenn Beck, 3/03/10, via Nexis]
Beck: “What's Happening” In Greece “Is Coming Here.” From Beck's Fox News show:
Now, here's another story you have to pay attention to and it is Greece. We talked about it last week. Economists are now saying that the U.S. is actually in worse shape than Greece is. Let me come over here, let me show you what's happening over in Greece. Show some pictures over here.
There are riots in the streets. There are protests. There are -- they're burning cars in the streets. Unions are all up in arms.
They're bankrupt. Overall debt was 113.4 percent of GDP.
Now, see if we have this right. In Greece, they have out-of-control debt and deficits. No slowdown in government spending or hiring. Gee, where have I heard that before?
The E.U. just punished Greece by stripping them of their right to vote at critical meetings next month. This is the cradle of democracy. What it means is: Greece no longer has any sovereignty in the E.U.
California, you better pay attention. What's happening over there is coming here. All you have to do is look across the Atlantic, you'll see our future. [Fox News, Glenn Beck, 2/17/10, via Nexis]
Beck: “We're Headed Down The Road” Of Greece, Which Is A “Recipe For Potential Disaster” And Riots. From Beck's Fox News show:
Let me show you a couple of pictures. Here are some riots. This picture was taken over in Greece less than two weeks ago. I think they are worried about, you know, all those crazy -- these must be tea party members, I think. Oh, they're anti-government.
The same thing is happening in Ireland now. Why? Because the people's money has been squandered by out-of-control politicians who have promised them things they can't do.
The people's future, your children's future is being destroyed by greedy governments that are in bed with big business. “The New York times” just reported that one out of every eight adults and one out of every four children get at least some of their food from food stamps every day. That is more than 36 million Americans.
Wow, that doesn't sound good. It sounds like we're headed down the road of Ireland or Greece or Iceland, because when you combine no jobs with hunger, and an unresponsive government, you have a recipe for potential disaster. Those kinds of pictures. [Fox News, Glenn Beck, 11/30/09, via Nexis]
