The Bigotry Of Howie Carr, Donald Trump’s Friend And Town Hall Host

Boston area right-wing talk radio host and Boston Herald columnist Howie Carr -- one of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s most vocal supporters in media -- will moderate a town hall event in New Hampshire with Trump. Carr has extensively used his media platforms to promote Trump’s campaign and frequently deploys discriminatory rhetoric against racial and religious minorities as well as women to support Trump’s divisive campaign.

Howie Carr Has A History Of Using Sexist, Racist Language, And Shilling For Trump

Howie Carr Is A Vocal Supporter Of Donald Trump

Carr Vacationed With Trump, Appeared At Rallies, And Promoted Trump On Radio And Twitter. Carr, whom Trump calls a “friend,” hosted the Republican nominee on his radio program at least six times from February 1 to March 15. Carr also used his Twitter account to call Trump’s primary opponent Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) “little Marco,” and to attack “welfare illegal alien Democrat thugs” and other Trump opponents. Additionally, Carr held a live broadcast of his radio show from a Trump rally, introduced Trump at several campaign events, and vacationed and played golf with Trump at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago-Club resort. Howie Carr Uses Racist Rhetoric Against African-Americans, Immigrants

Carr: Obama “Didn’t Have To Work For Anything ... Because Of The Color Of His Skin.” On the September 28 edition of WRKO's The Howie Carr Show, Carr complained that “this country handed everything to Barack Obama” and he “didn’t have to work for anything … just because of the color of his skin.”:

HOWIE CARR (HOST): The most catastrophic decision though, I think, as we look back on it in 20 or 50 years, as the history books record it, is the Iranian nuclear deal. Because that could end up killing tens of millions of Americans by giving the Mullahs the technology and ending the sanctions that enabled them to get the technology and giving them the money, the cash, that they need to buy the technology to build nuclear weapons. And you know they’re going to throw them at us. You just know -- and again, Obama thinks “Oh, I'm Mr. [politically correct]. I’m doing the right thing, you know? I don't hold it against these savages. These people who think that adultery causes earthquakes. These people who execute victims of homosexual rape. I celebrate diversity.”

Well, you know what? When they -- when, if they unleash nuclear weapons on United States of America -- the homeland -- they’re not going to ask, “Are you Mr. PC? Do you believe that the sound of the prayer call is one of the most beautiful sounds in the U.S.?” Those nuclear weapons are going to kill anybody, you know? Whether you’re gay, or whether you’re a beautiful person, or whether you are a Hollywood producer, or whether you’re an Obama bundler who got an ambassadorship. You are going to be dead, you know? It's not just going to kill deplorables and bitter clingers, it’s going to kill everybody and that’s what these people don’t understand. And they’re just --

That’s the worst thing about this administration. They’ve taken -- it took 230 years to make this the greatest country, the greatest society in human history, and they are trying to unravel it and destroy it for -- I don’t know why. I still don’t know why. What is -- this country handed everything to Barack Obama. He didn’t have to work for anything. Just because of the color of his skin he was given everything. And he still hates the country. [WKRO, The Howie Carr Show, 9/28/16]

Carr Defended Trump’s Immigration Proposals With Thirty Minutes Of Racism. Carr spent the first thirty minutes of the August 31 edition of The Howie Carr Show wielding anti-Mexican, anti-immigrant, and anti-Muslim rhetoric to support Trump’s border wall, which he claimed would “keep the barbarians out.” Carr said that Mexico sends “undesirables” to the United States who “can’t cut it in modern society,” and that the president of Mexico should “look on the bright side” of Trump’s visit, because he didn’t “drop an anchor baby” while he was there. Carr also suggested a caller named Mike change his name to “Muhammad” or “Miguel” to execute food stamp fraud. [Media Matters, 9/1/16]

Carr Imitated A Racist War Whoop To Mock Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). At a Donald Trump rally, Carr asked the audience, “You know Elizabeth Warren, right?” and then put his hand to his mouth, mimicking a stereotypical Native American war whoop. [Media Matters, 6/29/16]

Carr: Black Lives Matter Protesters Are “Filthy, Fat, Lazy, Stoned, Narcissistic, Occupy Hippies.” In a January 18, 2015, Boston Herald column, Carr railed against Black Lives Matter protesters in Boston, linking them to the Wall Street reform “Occupy” movement. He wrote that protesters should “put down the bong” and “start a diet (complete with a new hashtag: #SaladsMatter),” before threatening that they would be “in such a world of hurt” if they try to shut down traffic before a Patriots' game. [Howie Carr Show, 1/18/15 via Internet Archive]

Carr To Opponents Of The Confederate Flag: “What's The Big Deal?” In a June 20, 2015, column, Carr criticized Massachusetts Republican Gov. Charlie Baker for changing his stance on South Carolina's flying of the Confederate flag over its statehouse, writing that Baker should “grow a pair.” He also questioned why people want the flag to come down, mentioning that U.S. Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), who is black, and Republican South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who is Indian-American, “don't seem to have a problem with the flag.” [Howie Carr Show, 6/20/15 via Internet Archive]

Carr: Obama Hates Trump More Than ISIS. Carr hosted Trump on the June 13 edition of his radio show to agree with Carr that President Obama has “more anger” for Trump than he does for the terrorist group ISIS. Carr also repeated dog-whistle language used by Trump earlier to insinuate that there is, in Trump’s words, “something going on that is very strange” with President Obama. [Media Matters, 6/14/16]

Howie Carr Uses Sexist Attacks Against Women

Carr: Megyn Kelly’s “Manicured” Appearance “Doesn’t Attract Me As Much As Her Old Look Used To.” On the April 14 edition of Mark Simone’s talk radio show, Carr attacked Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly’s physical appearance after she had a high-profile meeting with Donald Trump. Carr remarked that he “liked her better when she had the sort of -- the less-manicured, the less-made-up look that she has on at night now,” adding that Kelly’s current appearance “doesn’t attract me as much as her old look used to.” [WOR, The Mark Simone Show, 4/14/16]

Carr: Former Miss Universe Alicia Machado Was “Unable To Perform The Function Of A Beauty Queen,” Which Is To Be “Attractive To The Male Gender.” Carr complained during the September 28 edition of his radio show that former Miss Universe Alicia Machado, whom Trump had previously attacked as “Miss Piggy,” had gained so much weight that “she might as well be sucking on a helium gun.” Carr added that Trump was right to criticize her appearance, since Machado’s weight gain left her “unable to perform the function of a beauty queen, which is being attractive to the male gender.” [WRKO, The Howie Carr Show, 9/28/16]

Carr Mocked A Rape Victim And Blamed Her For Her Own Assault. During his November 3, 2011, radio show, Carr mocked a woman who was raped at an Occupy Wall Street protest, saying that she probably has a “trust fund,” and asking, “What did she think was going to happen?”:

HOWIE CARR (HOST): One of the women, an 18-year-old Massachusetts native -- how much you wanna bet she's got a trust fund? -- told police she got into an argument with a male friend with whom she was sharing a tent about 6 a.m. Saturday. She left and met Iketubosin, the official said. He offered to let her sleep in his tent, saying he had to go to work in the park's makeshift kitchen. The alleged victim took Iketubosin up on his offer and went to sleep, but she soon awoke to find Iketubosin removing her pants, the official said.

What is wrong with these people? What did she think was going to happen? She told police she asked him to stop but he didn't comply. Then he raped her, the official said.

Isn't that nice? They're certainly, they're really making a great statement against capitalism, aren't they? Getting raped and groped. [Blue Mass Group, 11/3/11; WRKO.com, 11/3/11]
