Uh oh, what will Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh make of this one?
It appears that incoming Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee -- Republican Rep. Fred Upton -- has hired a former Google lobbyist as staff director for the committee that oversees net neutrality issues.
The news broke late last week that Upton tapped longtime lobbyist and former Republican aide Gary Andres to serve as staff director of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and according to reports today, Andres has accepted the position.
According to a Media Matters review of federal lobbying disclosure reports, from October 2009 until September 2010, while Andres was a top lobbyist for Dutko Worldwide, he lobbied Congress on net neutrality legislation for Google.
Beck and Limbaugh -- already outspoken opponents of Upton's chairmanship -- have repeatedly railed against net neutrality, so how will they react to his hiring a lobbyist who presumably lobbied for it?
To be sure, Andres has serious conservative credentials. As Politico reported, he's “a prominent conservative columnist” who regularly contributed to The Weekly Standard and “served in the George H.W. Bush administration as deputy assistant to the president for legislative affairs and later worked on President George W. Bush's transition team.”
But telecom issues were noticeably absent from Upton's hearty endorsement of Andres issued earlier today.
