SHEPARD SMITH (HOST): Google and Facebook report they’re trying to crackdown now on fake news. BuzzFeed recently reported it found examples of bogus headlines from both sides of the political aisle, as a matter of example, including a hoax that Pope Francis had endorsed Donald Trump, which he did not, and a fake surgeon general warning about drinking every time the Republican nominee told a lie during a debate. The Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg defended his website saying 99 percent of what people see on the site is authentic, but his company and Google have announced plans to ban fake news websites from using their advertising services.

LISA KENNEDY MONTGOMERY: It makes us realize that perhaps we should be getting our news from real sources, like the news deck, and perhaps not relying on social media to provide them for us.
SMITH: Yeah. Because that social media feed, Zuckerberg and others say they're working on this and they’re going to try to eliminate the ones that are just really nothingness, nothing burgers.
MONTGOMERY: It is a bunch of phony baloney. You know what baloney is? Delicious, and mostly filler. So what they've done is created these algorithms, and we know that Facebook had some issues. In May, when it was thought that conservatives weren't properly serviced in the news feed, and then there was a con fab at the Facebook headquarters -- just Facebook, we lost the “the” thanks to Justin Timberlake -- but now we know that there were algorithms in place, which means that human beings have to actually use their good senses to determine what is real and what is not.

SMITH: There are news sites that just makeup everything. You don't want anybody to just go like -- if you're a liberal, you shouldn't go to just liberal sites.
MONTGOMERY: No, exactly right.
SMITH: You should go to places where -- aggregators of news facts, because some things really are black and white. For instance, black is black and white is white, and those are true things, and it doesn't matter what your opinion is, those things are true.
