What Republicans? Fox Hypes WI Democrats' Recall, Ignoring WI Republicans And Charges Of GOP Election Fraud

On Thursday's edition of Fox & Friends, co-host Steve Doocy reminded viewers of “Democratic lawmakers in Wisconsin who ran away from their responsibilities” to protest the stripping of union workers' collective bargaining rights in order to cheer the recall elections being held against of three of them. However, Doocy completely ignored that six Wisconsin Republican incumbents are also the subject of recalls, and that there were serious allegations of election fraud in the recall petitions filed against the three Wisconsin Democrats in question.

From the broadcast:

DOOCY: Remember the Democratic lawmakers from Wisconsin who ran away from their responsibilities and hid out in hotels in other states during the debates with the unions? Well, three of them are now facing recall elections. They will be held next month.

It's curious that that's all Doocy said on the topic because as Talking Points Memo reports, there was significant evidence of fraud in the recall petitions against Democrats. TPM reported that, "[t]he Dem's challenges [to the recall petitions] outlined a significant number of signatures that were the products of apparent fraud." For instance, one of the signatures was that of a man who had been dead for twenty years, and was reportedly the father of a very liberal state representative. Another, as the Wisconsin State Journal reported, involved a woman who collected recall signatures on an Indian reservation by telling the would-be signatories that “the petitions were to support schools, Democrats and tribal rights.” TPM also reported that the Democrats “produced affidavits from people alleging various dirty tricks, ranging from claims that they were misled into signing -- being told that it was to support the legislator in question, or to recall Walker, etc -- to claims from some individuals that they did not sign their names at all, but were forged as having done so (possibly by getting their names from the phonebook).”

Despite these findings, because of the number of seemingly legitimate signatures, the Wisconsin state Government Accountability Board voted in favor of having recall elections for those three Democratic senators. However, since Fox loves to hype up bogus allegations of voter fraud when the so-called “fraud” is alleged to benefit Democrats, it's interesting that they made no mention of credible allegations of voter fraud perpetrated by Republicans.

Doocy also completely skipped the part of the story where six Republicans are also the subject of recalls, and for the same reason. The Wisconsin Journal Sentinel reports that “at no time in U.S. history have attempts been made to recall so many legislators at the same time over the same issue.” The same WJS article also reports:

The board unanimously approved recall elections for Republican Sens. Rob Cowles of Allouez, Alberta Darling of River Hills and Sheila Harsdorf of River Falls. That follows rulings last week to hold recall elections for Republican Sens. Randy Hopper of Fond du Lac, Dan Kapanke of LaCrosse and Luther Olsen of Ripon.

The people of Wisconsin are clearly disappointed with their election choices. However, it is the responsibility of a reputable news organization to show the entire story when reporting, instead of just that which advances your political agenda. Fox News, are you a reputable news organization?
