On June 1, FOX News Channel host Bill O'Reilly devoted an entire hour of his nationally syndicated two-hour radio show, The Radio Factor, to criticizing financier, philanthropist, and political activist George Soros. In the course of the hour-long segment, O'Reilly applied the following labels to Soros: “as far left as you can get without moving to Havana” and “a total radical on all the issues that Americans care about.” O'Reilly also said Soros “wants abortion even out of the womb -- out of the womb!” and accused Soros of “wanting to turn this country completely upside down.”
Two weeks ago, as Media Matters for America reported, O'Reilly invited Richard Poe -- contributing editor for NewsMax magazine (a monthly right-wing publication with a history of publishing baseless conspiracy theories about Democrats) -- onto the May 18 edition of FOX News Channel's The O'Reilly Factor to discuss Poe's May 2004 NewsMax magazine cover story, "George Soros' Coup" (for more on Poe's cover story, see Media Matters for America's June 1 analysis "O'Reilly Factor guest Richard Poe smeared George Soros"). O'Reilly said to Poe on May 18, “If Soros is what you say he is, and I have no reason to doubt it. I mean, what I know about the man pretty much matches up to what you found out, the Democratic Party is taking a lot of money from him.” As Media Matters for America reported, O'Reilly had made his opinion of Soros known earlier on the same day during the broadcast of The Radio Factor, calling Soros “a real sleazoid.”
