Gabriel Sherman On Trump Firing US Attorney Preet Bharara: “Clearly Rupert Murdoch Is Coming Out On Top”

ALI VELSHI (HOST): It appears that [former U.S. attorney Preet] Bharara and Trump planned for Bharara to stay on. If that had not been the deal, Bharara would not have been permitted to say that as he walked out. Someone would have been corrected him, or Trump would have said that's not the conversation we had. So what do you think happened?

GABRIEL SHERMAN: Well, what we know is that this was a deal that was in place. Trump clearly changed his mind, as your previous guest pointed out. He's within his rights to do that. But what we know is that on Thursday, Sean Hannity went on Fox News and called for Donald Trump to purge all of the Obama holdovers from the Justice Department. Less than 24 hours later, the Justice Department sends out a letter saying all 46 U.S. attorneys appointed by Obama should resign. Now, we're not saying that that was directly related, but it's a very interesting coincidence. Now the talk -- this is beyond fascinating -- the talk to replace Preet Bharara is a lawyer named Marc Mukasey, a top lawyer at the powerhouse litigation firm Greenberg Traurig, who is the lawyer for Roger Ailes. So boil this down. The man who is defending Roger Ailes at the heart of the sexual harassment scandal would now potentially be overseeing the federal investigation into those allegations. So, this is a case where clearly Rupert Murdoch is coming out on top through this change of process here.
