Good Morning America onscreen text baselessly asked if Democrats were “losing ground”

Throughout an interview with Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman Rep. Rahm Emmanuel (IL) on the October 31 edition of ABC's Good Morning America, onscreen text rhetorically asked, “Are Dems Losing Ground? Will Republicans Hold Congress?” But the only evidence that co-host Robin Roberts provided during the interview to suggest that Republicans might “hold Congress” was that White House senior adviser Karl Rove “continues to smile, continues to be very confident about what's going to happen a week from today.”

In fact, in the previous segment, Stuart Rothenberg, editor and publisher of The Rothenberg Political Report, characterized Rove's confidence as cheerleading, saying that “part of [Rove's] job is to get Republicans enthusiastic to make sure that they turn out. And if he says they're going to lose, there would be a lot of Republicans who stay home, and that would make the problem worse.” Additionally, during that segment, Good Morning America's senior national correspondent Claire Shipman called Rove's attitude “pure psychology,” saying that he exudes confidence because he knows that “voters want to back a winner.”

From the October 31 edition of ABC's Good Morning America:

SHIPMAN: Finally, and perhaps what's most behind the smile: pure psychology. Sources say Rove believes whatever the reality, voters want to back a winner.

ROTHENBERG: It's part of his job is to get Republicans enthusiastic to make sure that they turn out. And if he says they're going to lose, there would be a lot of Republicans who stay home, and that would make the problem worse.

SHIPMAN: And let me tell you, when you talk to Rove as we did yesterday from the campaign trail, he can lay out a compelling scenario as to just how Republicans might hang on to the House. He said, “Every way I look at it, I see we have a structural advantage.” Remember, Karl Rove has a lot of wins under his belt, but he's headed into most of them with a decided edge -- not so this time, Robin.
