WND deems Michael Savage anti-gay enough to address conference

After Ann Coulter agreed to headline an event for gay Republicans, conservative publication WorldNetDaily axed her scheduled role as keynote speaker of their “Taking America Back National Conference.” Since then, the two sides have been engaged in a war of words, culminating in Coulter labeling Joseph Farah “swine” and a “publicity whore” after he revealed details of a private email exchange he had with Coulter. Coulter also said that Farah “could give less than two sh-ts about the conservative movement - as demonstrated by his promotion of the birther nonsense.”

Though Coulter -- who has a long history of anti-gay rhetoric - was apparently deemed insufficiently bigoted for WND, conservatives have a deep bullpen for this sort of thing. Enter “American phenom” Michael Savage, who not only hates gay people, but is also a big fan of the “birther nonsense.”

In a blog post last night, WND announced that “talk-radio superstar” Savage is going to make a “rare public appearance” at the event. Savage has a long, long history of incendiary, bigoted remarks about the LGBT community:

  • Savage was fired from MSNBC in 2003 after he described a caller as a “sodomite” and told him to “get AIDS and die.”
  • In 2008, Savage had this to say about people who opposed Prop 8: “You're insane, hate the family, hate man and woman, hate your mother and father, hate the Bible, hate the church, and hate the synagogue, of course you're in favor of 'no' on Proposition 8.”
  • Savage frequently invokes the “gay mafia” and the “homosexual mafia” that supposedly run “every avenue of this culture,” and has lashed out at Media Matters as a “gay, fascist website” run by a bunch of “snitch perverts.”
  • Savage once pointed to gay marriage as evidence that our country is “probably 50 leagues below the degeneracy that brought about Hitler. We are the sickest, most disgusting country on the earth.”
  • Savage deemed a 2009 Iowa Supreme Court gay marriage ruling a “victory for perversion.”
  • In 2007, Savage suggested that sexual reassignment surgery caused the Columbine massacre. He has also suggested that 9-11 was God's punishment for “sex change operations speeding up” and “lesbian fertility clinics” increasing in the U.S.
  • Discussing gay marriage in 2006, Savage announced that the “radical homosexual agenda will not stop until religion is outlawed in this country,” and told listeners that gay people “threaten your very survival.” He added that gays are “all not nice decorators,” and that “gay marriage is just the tip of the iceberg. They want full and total subjugation of this society to their agenda.”

So if WND was looking for someone that wouldn't embarrass them by showing signs of humanity and tolerance, it looks like they've found their man.
