Despite a January 22 CNN report debunking the false claim that U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) spent four years in a radical Muslim seminary, or radical madrassa, as a child in Indonesia, 630 KHOW-AM co-host Dan Caplis by January 25 had yet to address his original repetition and defense of the discredited story.

On the January 19 broadcast of The Caplis & Silverman Show, Caplis adamantly defended Fox News' reporting of the Obama smear, as Colorado Media Matters noted:

CAPLIS: You know, I guess Fox has just decided they don't like having money anymore. They just don't like being on the air, so they've decided to slander and defame Barack Obama through false reporting of material facts. I guess that's the only conclusion I can draw after listening to Craig's rant. So I guess now if I accurately report what's being reported as fact by a major news network, I'm a partisan. Well, you know, hey, you can throw labels on anything that you want, but facts are facts. And Fox News reporting now as a matter of fact that Hillary Clinton has -- quote, unquote -- played the madrassa card on Obama. Fox reporting as a matter of fact that Obama spent four years in a Muslim seminary. Hey, yeah, if Fox has decided to false report and take the consequences, then that would be really out of character for them, but that's the information out there.

However, as CNN reported three days later, “Allegations that Sen. Barack Obama was educated in a radical Muslim school known as a 'madrassa' are not accurate ...” According to CNN senior international correspondent John Vause, who “visited the Basuki school, which Obama attended from 1969 to 1971”:

“I came here to Barack Obama's elementary school in Jakarta looking for what some are calling an Islamic madrassa ... like the ones that teach hate and violence in Pakistan and Afghanistan,” Vause said on the “Situation Room” Monday. “I've been to those madrassas in Pakistan ... this school is nothing like that.”

CNN also quoted the deputy headmaster of the Basuki school, who said, “This is a public school. We don't focus on religion.” The same report quoted an “Obama aide” referring to Fox News' reporting of the madrassa story as “appallingly irresponsible.”

When co-host Craig Silverman confronted Caplis with the CNN report during their January 22 broadcast, Caplis replied, “As the world turns,” failing to retract his previous remarks about Obama or Fox News.

In addition to the CNN report, the Associated Press on January 24 reported that its interviews had determined the madrassa allegation was baseless, and that Obama's office had distributed a lengthy memo to the news media detailing the facts that debunk the madrassa story.

SILVERMAN: Also, CNN reporting that that was a false smear against Barack Obama that he was educated in a radical Muslim school known as a madrassa, says Insight magazine, connected to The Washington Times. A spokesman for Clinton, who's also bidding for the White House, denied that her campaign was the source of the Obama claim.
